Passport and Belgium Work Permit

Passport

All nationals except EU nationals holding a valid national ID card require passport valid for at least three months beyond length of stay. Some EU nationals may be required to present a valid passport in addition to a national ID card.

EU nationals with valid passports are free to come and go, but they must register at the local police station or town hall within eight days of arrival. Children must also be registered. The period of their stay (more or less than three months) in Belgium and their capacity (employee, student, family member) will determine if a residence permit needs to be issued.

Belgium Work Permit

Receiving a Belgium work permit is difficult. In practice, Belgium only issues work permits to highly qualified personnel, executives, researchers, trainees and workers in fields where there is a labor shortage in Belgium. Students entering Belgium are permitted to work part-time during the course of their studies and full-time during break periods. A work permit is required for employment while school is in session.

The employer must apply for the work permit with a proof that no Belgian or European Union citizen is able to do the job. Normally, the foreign worker will receive the Belgium work permit valid only for one employer and for one year. Such a permit needs renewing each year.

You may apply for a residence permit, which would allow you to work. This is valid for five years and should be issued within six months of your arrival.
