Denmark economy - overview: The Denmark economy has in recent years undergone strong expansion fueled primarily by private consumption growth, but also supported by exports and investments. This thoroughly modern market economy features high-tech agriculture, up-to-date small-scale and corporate industry, extensive government welfare measures, comfortable living standards, a stable currency, and high dependence on foreign trade. Denmark is a member of the European Union (EU); Danish legislation and regulations conform to EU standards on almost all issues.

Denmark is a net exporter of food and energy and enjoys a comfortable balance of payments surplus. The controversy over caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad printed in a Denmark newspaper in September 2005 led to boycotts of some Denmark exports to the Muslim world, especially exports of dairy products, but the boycotts did not have a significant impact on the overall Denmark economy.

Denmark's economy began slowing in 2007 with the end of a housing boom. Denmark made a modest recovery in 2010 in part because of increased government spending; however, the country experienced a technical recession in late 2010-early 2011.

The Danish economy is characterized by extensive government welfare measures and an equitable distribution of income. The Denmark living standards and welfare benefits are among the highest in the world. A major long-term issue will be the sharp decline in the ratio of workers to retirees.

So far Denmark has decided not to join the European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). Denmark held the EU presidency during the first half of 2012.
