Management Nature of Work

Management/managers administers industrial, commercial and government organizations. They may do this on their own or through a team of senior executives. Depending on the type of organization, the senior manager will provide leadership for the achievement of either policy objectives, increased profit or market dominance.

Management includes executive and managerial positions not otherwise classified including presidents, CEOs, managing directors, vice-presidents, general managers. Management positions in particular occupations are listed under the occupation e.g. a Vice President of Marketing would be found under Marketing not Management.

Management Nature of Work

A board of directors, to which they report, usually appoints managers. Working alone or in conjunction with the board of directors, they either develop and establish objectives for the company and develop or approve policies and programs. They plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate, through middle managers, the operations of their organization in relation to established objectives.

Management Work Conditions

Management often works in an office environment. Management may be required to travel to national or international destinations. Management work regular hours but are often required to work longer hours that may include evenings and weekends.

Senior Management may perform the following tasks:

  • assess the performance of the organization and its activities
  • authorize funds to implement policies and programs
  • consult with staff and review their recommendations and reports
  • decide on the organization’s objectives, policies and programs and set standards and targets
  • guide the preparation of reports, budgets and forecasts and present them to boards and other governing bodies
  • provide overall direction and management of the organization’s utilization of resources, including personnel, technology and physical assets such as buildings
  • represent the organization in negotiations, and at meetings, conventions and seminars, and liaise with other organizations
  • select or approve the selection of senior staff
