The roughneck or floorman is a member of the oil drilling crew. This is one of entry-level jobs on an oilrig. Many people who begin working in the oil and gas industry start out by working as roughnecks.

The roughneck position is an important part of any rig's operation that require the team players who are energetic and reliable.

Usually are three or four crews per oil-rig working eight or 12-hour shifts. There might be one or two roughnecks assigned to each of the crews. At some rigs, rotation crews only work 14 days in a row, at others they may stay for up to 3 months in a row.

Roughnecks are employed by drilling and well servicing contractors and by petroleum producing companies.

Roughneck personal requirements

• be 18 years old (as it is a legal requirement on most mine and quarry sites)
• able to work as part of a team
• aptitude for mechanics and able to handle machinery
• enjoy practical and manual activities
• good organization skills
• have a drug and alcohol clearance
• pass a medical examination
• physically fit
• willing to work in remote areas under difficult conditions

Roughneck work conditions

The roughneck usually work long hours in all weather conditions (high or very low temperatures, wind, rain, snow) on extended roster systems, usually as member of a drilling crew. The roughneck usually performs semiskilled and unskilled manual labor. Work is generally dirty and hard but the pay is very good, as are all jobs in the oil and gas industry. In addition, you will often get excellent accommodations and exceptional quality food.

Roughneck duties and tasks

The roughnecks carry out a variety of general laboring duties and operate equipment to assist in the drilling and servicing of oil and gas wells. The roughnecks perform some or all of the following duties:


• The roughneck assist in setting up, taking down and transporting drilling and service rigs and service equipment
• The roughneck clean up, paint, remove rust in all drill rig areas
• The roughneck keep the deck clean and clear of safety hazards
• The roughneck handle, sort and move drill tools, pipe, cement and other materials
• The roughneck maintain drilling equipment on the drill floor
• The roughneck manipulate sections of pipe or drill stem at the rig floor during drilling and during the removal and replacement of strings of pipe or drill stem and drill bit
• The roughneck may drive truck to transport materials and well service equipment
• and perform other duties as assigned

Many roughnecks, in a relatively short time, after just one or two contracts, are promoted to higher-paying and more responsible positions, such as a driller or eventually oil rig toolpusher.
