The ways that we go about a job search have changed. It used to be that you could call a few recruiters, send out some CVs or resumes and look for job ads in your Saturday newspaper.

Job Search Tips

  • Treat job search/hunting like a full-time job (only you are working for yourself!). Have a plan, get daycare for your children and be 'on the job' 35-40 hours per week.
  • Prepare and practice your few-sentences "speech" about who you are, what you do and what you want to do.
  • Ensure that your CV or resume provides the best possible "first impression" and always have one with you. On the spot, hiring does happen.
  • Only hand your resume/CV to the person who hires (introduce yourself and shake their hand). If they are not available, find out when they will be, and go back.
  • Follow-up, follow-up, follow-up by phone and in-person (keep a diary of dates, names and notes to track your contacts and then, most importantly, be methodical in following-up).
  • Make sure your voice messaging system is professional. Coach your roommates or children on how to politely answer the phone and take a message.
  • Read the newspaper every day. Besides checking out the classifieds, find out what is going on. Apply to the companies that are growing. Spend a day with the yellow pages in the section of interest to you, and another day with Internet job search sites.
  • Participate in as many volunteer activities as you can... the networking opportunities are priceless. Let everyone know you are looking for work, including your family, friends, the coach, mail carrier and neighbours (you would be surprised at how many excellent jobs come about as a result of an unexpected recommendation).
  • Approach people in the places you would like to work and ask them about what they do, and why they like it. Pay attention to how they are dressed and their approach to e.g. customer service.
  • Be prepared for interviews. Practice answering generic interview questions, do your research, know about the company that you are applying for and be prepared to get your message across (what you have to offer to the employer)
  • Don't get discouraged if you are not immediately successful.

You may run your job search right now, but when you find some suitable jobs you must apply immediately with your current CV or resume and cover letter.

Remember that your CV/resume must be targeted, scannable and generate hits. If you have difficulty with your CV writing or resume writing instead of staring at a blank piece of paper, use CV samples and CV templates, resume samples and resume templates.

Most recruiters expect to receive a cover letter together with your CV or resume. So, prepare a cover letter convincing the reader why you are the best candidate for the interview using cover letter writing tips.

In recent years it becomes increasingly popular to join the LinkedIn or Facebook social networking websites for professionals, where you may search for jobs and have your keyword-optimized, rich content profile with your current CV or resume. Hiring managers use them more frequently to consult your profile and supplement or check against the CV/resume you send along. If you do not have an account, create one and include your social media link(s) on your CV/resume.
However, you should manage your online presence. Eliminate any photos and statements that could reflect poorly on you. From an employer’s point of view, someone who emphasizes partying on a social networking site is not focused on jobs and those who post complaints about work or colleagues are less desirable candidates. Online CV/resume should not include sensitive information as they could show a lack of respect for confidentiality and discretion.

When your job covering letter and resume or CV is completed you are ready to submit your resume to employers, Job recruiters and headhunters in places where you want to work.

When a potential employer invites you for an interview, you need to prepare yourself to win the interview and get the job you want.

Other Job Search Tips Info
