When 153 American companies were asked to list the reasons why they were not hired and rejected applicants who were interviewed for available jobs. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS and CHARACTERISTICS were the major factors. Only two of the 40 reasons listed are related to educational and/or technical competence.

  2. Overbearing attitude - conceited, arrogant, 'superiority complex'.

  3. Inability to express oneself clearly - poor voice, diction or grammar.

  4. Lack of clear career goals.

  5. Lack of interest or enthusiasm - passive, indifferent attitude.

  6. Lack of confidence and pose - very ill at ease or overlay nervous.

  7. Overemphasis on money - interested in its best salary.

  8. Poor scholastic record.

  9. Unwillingness to start at the bottom - expects too much too soon.

  10. Evasive - make excuses hedges about unfavourable information, avoids answers.

  11. Lack of diplomacy or tact.

  12. Lack of maturity.

  13. Lack of courtesy - ill-mannered.

  14. Condemnation of previous employers.

  15. Poor attitude about school.

  16. Lack of vitality - no spark.

  17. Failure to look the interviewer in the eye.

  18. Limp, fish handshake.

  19. Inability to relate skills and experience to the position applied for.

  20. Sloppy application form or resume outdated.

  21. Lack of genuine interest in the position - merely shopping around, just want the job.

  22. Lack of commitment - wants the job only for a short time.

  23. Little sense of humour.

  24. Lack of knowledge of the field of specialization.

  25. Lack of research into the company and/or industry.

  26. Emphasis on whom s/he knows.

  27. Unwillingness to be mobile.

  28. Negative or cynical attitude.

  29. Laziness.

  30. Lack of tolerance - strong prejudices.

  31. Narrow interests.

  32. Poor handling of personal finances.

  33. Obvious personal problems.

  34. Failure to ask appropriate questions about the job or company.

  35. No interest in community activities.

  36. Inability to accept criticism.

  37. Lack of appreciation for the value of experience.

  38. Radical ideas.

  39. Late to interview without good reason.

  40. Failure to express appreciation for interviewer's time - no thank you or handshake.
