Responsibilities

  • Responsible for performing MRI exams ensuring optimal diagnostic quality of images.
    • 1)Selection of appropriate coil-type, coil set-up, patient positioning, appropriate exam protocol, including proper scanning parameters.
    • 2)Utilization of appropriate patient immobilization techniques.
    • 3)Troubleshoot MRI equipment malfunctions; contact service personnel if indicated.
    • 4)Utilization of appropriate imaging format and imaging technique.
    • 5)Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
    • 6)Ability to access a vein for the purpose of injecting IV contrast.
  • Responsible for securing pertinent medical history from the patient, for each MRI procedure, in order to obtain accurate medical information for film interpretation.
    • 1)Obtain a thorough medical history from the patient, relevant medical information from physicians, office staff, and/or other medical facilities.
    • 2)Document pertinent medical information (past and present) on the patient’s exam requisition and/or medical history questionnaire.
  • Complies with established hospital/MRI Department safety standards.
    • 1)Utilize appropriate safety standards while working in or around an area of high magnetic field strength.
    • 2)Educate other staff about MRI safety and the potential dangers when working in or around an area of high magnetic field strength.
    • 3)Ensure that MRI screening procedures are followed according to departmental policy and procedure.
    • 4)Operate all equipment in a safe manner according to manufacturers' guidelines and recommendations.
    • 5)Utilize Universal Precautions, isolation techniques and infection control techniques according to hospital policy and procedure.
    • 6)Report equipment malfunctions, damaged and/or defective equipment and remove such defective equipment from service, according to hospital policy and procedure.
    • 7)Ability to recognize contra indications and or adverse reactions to IV contrast.
  • Responsible for documentation of departmental records and proper upkeep of supplies and equipment as per departmental procedure.
    • 1)Document patient/exam information, malfunction/repair, patient reactions to contrast media, sedation related complications, and patient/staff related incidents.
    • 2)Maintain all equipment, clean and disinfect equipment.
    • 3)Maintain exam room and patient prep areas with adequate supplies.
  • Possess the degree of knowledge/skill necessary to perform various other job-related functions.
    • 1)Education: a. Maintain American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification and IDNS licensure and/or ARMRIT b. Maintain current CPR. c. Keep abreast of current MRI technology. d. Seek out additional education resources to aid in skill development.
    • 2)Communication: a. Possess good interpersonal and interpersonal communication skills to effectively communicate with coordinator, manager, director, coworkers, patient registration, physicians, nursing staff and staff from other departments. b. Be able to coordinate with Patient Escort, the transportation of patients coming to and going from the MRI department. c. Be able to effectively coordinate exam times with other departments when patients are scheduled for multiple procedures.
    • 3)Patient Care: a. Demonstrate an empathic, caring and concerned attitude when dealing with patients and their family members, ease patient anxiety and provide for patient comfort. b. Educate patients about aspects of their MRI procedure, answer patient’s questions, and address patient concerns. c. Inform patients about the possible MRI contraindications/side effects of MRI contrast media when applicable.
    • 4)Working Relationships: a. Be able to work independently with minimal supervision. b. Act appropriately and in a professional manner. c. Demonstrate a willingness to provide flexibility to the department to accommodate schedule changes and requests for overtime. d. Demonstrate a willingness to work as a team player, in and out of the department, including training and on-boarding of students and newly hired technologists. Participation in team effort preparing for and maintaining ACR standards in the department and ACR accreditation as needed. e. Participate in on-call when necessary. f. Rotate holiday coverage. g. Rotate shifts as needed.

Requirements

  • Ability to anticipate patient, employee and department needs and act appropriately on those needs. – Able to work in and around an area of high magnetic field strength – Holiday call-ins in order to accommodate patient and staff needs. – Ability to sit, stand for extended periods of time. – Exposure to critically ill patients. – Ability to start IV’s – Good communication skills both written and oral – Good organizational skills. This position will need to recognize needs and behaviors of a variety of age groups of patients treated, i.e., understand child growth and development, normal patterns of adolescent behavior and look for signs of normal aging; prior experience with various age groups is preferred.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
