Life Coach (Life Skills Learning Center)
Reports To: Program Supervisor
I. Position Summary
The Life Coach is responsible for provision of direct training services to consumers in Able's Life Skills Learning Center (a Day Training Activity Center). Specifically, the Life Coach will implement program curriculum, direct center-based and community training, record outcomes, address the objectives of each consumer served as identified in their Individual Program Plan (IPP), participate in consumer assessment, planning, and evaluation, and handle other duties as directed by the Program Manager. The Life Coach will also be responsible for driving a 9 passenger Van for consumer transportation to/from the program and community integration training activities.
As this is a program licensed through the State of California and vendorized through Regional Center, the Life Coach will be responsible for understanding as well as adherence to Title 22 and 17 regulations.
II. Qualifications
One year of experience in a human services delivery system working with adults with developmental disabilities preferred.
Must demonstrate a commitment to the program goals and consumer outcomes as outlined in the program design. Must demonstrate a commitment to the concept of community integration, critical skill development, normalization, and consumer directed planning.
Must possess the ability to communicate well and work as team player. Ability to plan, organize, and implement consumer program plans and incorporate them into an efficient training process. Able to effectively communicate in both written and verbal form. Able to maintain ongoing liaison with social service agencies in the community. Must have a broad knowledge of disabilities.
While the typical qualifying entrance background may include all of the above, desirable qualifications including any combination of training, education and experience that demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position may be substituted.
High School education or GED is required. Must be at least 21 years of age. A valid California Driver's license, good D.M.V. printout, reliable transportation, and auto insurance required. All applicants will be required to pass an educational and employment background check. In addition, they must successfully complete a drug screen, physical, and tuberculosis test. Must be CPR and first aid certified and pass both FBI/DOJ background and fingerprint checks before employment.
III. Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
1. Key Position Responsibilities
- Curriculum: Will be responsible for the design and implementation of curriculum modules for the consumers. Responsible for addressing consumers IPP objectives and maintaining curriculum outcomes. Will record consumer outcomes daily and will work with LS Counselor to maintain information about consumers’ program goals and outcomes in conjunction with their annual goals.
- Consumer Safety: to include maintaining staff/consumer ratio, assisting each consumer as necessary and encouraging self-help where possible. Ensure and provide for the safety and well-being of consumers at all times.
- Policies and Procedures: Will follow all agency policy, LSLC policy, accreditation standards, state licensing, and referral/funding criteria and regulations.
2. Safety
- Will operate and maintain the program facility and vehicles in a safe fashion ensuring compliance with agency policy and licensing provisions.
- Will be responsible for agency vehicle safety inspections and maintaining vehicle cleanliness.
- Maintains vigilance in monitoring consumers’ activities and environment to ensure their safety.
- Ensures that each client receives necessary first aid and other needed medical services, including arrangement for and/or provision of transportation to the nearest available services.

- May be required to be cross-trained in other agency positions.
2. Will be required, as necessary, to use own vehicle during the course of fulfilling assigned duties and tasks.
3. Other Duties as Assigned
- Other assignments as necessary and not limited to the Essential and Marginal duties listed above.

V. Language Skills:
Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents such as general business periodicals, professional journals, technical/operating procedures, government regulation/policies, and program directives. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, procedure manuals, policies, and meet casework requirements. Ability to speak effectively before small and large groups.
VI. Mathematical Skills:
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions, and relative weight to practical situations. Ability to understand financial statements and use them for program monitoring.
VII. Reasoning Ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to smell. The employee will be required to travel between the Case Service Representative office and the work center area. The employee may be required to walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, or crouch.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. On rare occasions, the employee may be required to move loads of over 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
IX. Work Environment:

The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles. While performing the duties of this job, the employee seldom works in outside weather conditions.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally loud.
