Job Summary:

 

The Fire Alarm Inspector is a field technician responsible for testing and inspecting fire alarm systems including control panels, initiating devices, and notification appliances at customer sites in compliance with NFPA standards and company policies. Duties include performing inspections, documenting results, identifying code violations, and conducting follow-ups to ensure compliance. The role requires punctuality, proper maintenance of tools and equipment, strong communication skills, and adherence to safety protocols. Inspectors also perform acceptance testing for new systems, issue permits when applicable, and provide clear, detailed reports and recommendations.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:



  • Test and inspect fire alarm control panels, transmitters, initiating devices, and notification appliances at customer locations per NFPA standards and company policies.
  • Perform tests and inspections in an efficient manner, including one-person and multi-person tests.
  • Accurately document test results on paper and in the company’s digital ticketing system in accordance with NFPA Standards and ADS Company policy.
  • Arrive on time for all scheduled jobs, accounting for traffic, weather, and distance.
  • Communicate job details, status updates, and issues with managers, coworkers, and schedulers.
  • Perform acceptance testing and inspections on newly installed fire alarm systems.
  • Inspect buildings for fire hazards and code violations, including combustible material accumulation, electrical wiring issues, and blocked or non-functional fire exits.
  • Conduct fire code compliance follow-ups to ensure that corrective actions have been taken in cases where violations were found.
  • Inspect properties that store, handle, and use hazardous materials to ensure compliance with laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Issue hazardous materials permits when applicable.
  • Write detailed reports of fire inspections performed, fire code violations observed, and corrective recommendations offered.
  • Identify corrective actions needed to achieve code compliance and explain them to property owners or representatives.
  • Maintain company-issued vehicle, tools, inventory, and communication devices in good working order.
  • Comply with all ADS safety procedures and policies as outlined in the company’s personnel handbook.
  • Maintain punctuality and adhere to attendance requirements and scheduling expectations.
  • Adhere to all company policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.



Education/Experience:



  • High school Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of customer service experience is required.
  • Associates Degree in Electrical and Electronic Systems Technology or related field is preferred.
  • Technical/vocational certification or training is preferred.
  • Experience in the alarm or security systems industry is a plus.



Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:



  • Knowledge of fire alarm systems, including control panels, initiating devices, notification appliances, annunciators, and inspection/testing requirements in accordance with NFPA 72 and applicable codes and standards.
  • Working knowledge of electrical systems, fire alarm components, testing equipment, mobile devices, and software applications used for inspections and documentation.
  • Ability to inspect, test, and evaluate fire alarm systems to identify deficiencies, code compliance issues, and system performance concerns.
  • Ability to analyze information, troubleshoot problems, and exercise sound judgment when determining corrective actions or recommendations.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply technical manuals, work orders, code requirements, drawings, and procedural documents.
  • Strong written communication skills with the ability to prepare accurate, detailed, and professional inspection reports and related documentation.
  • Strong verbal communication and customer service skills, with the ability to interact professionally with customers, property representatives, coworkers, and management.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and complete work assignments efficiently while meeting inspection schedules and attendance expectations.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in operating testing and diagnostic equipment, mobile inspection software, Microsoft Office applications, and other company-approved technology.
  • Ability to recognize potentially hazardous conditions, follow established safety procedures, and maintain a safe work environment.
  • Ability to climb ladders, work in confined or elevated spaces, and safely lift and carry tools and equipment required to perform inspections.



Licenses/Certifications:



  • Maintain a driver’s license, maintain an insurable driving record, and be capable of driving on company assignments.
  • Must be able to obtain a Permanent Employee Registration Card from the State of Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (Illinois employees only)
  • NICET Level 1 Certification or higher is a plus.

Compensation:



The starting pay range for the Fire Alarm Inspector $20-22 per hour is based on knowledge, skills, education, certifications, and experience.
