Location:                                     Tsavo Landscape, Kenya

Position Summary

This position will be responsible for providing leadership, management, and accountability for the activities and performance of the African Wildlife Foundation’s (AWF) conservation program in the Tsavo Landscape. The Landscape Manager will also provide strategic oversight and direction for the implementation of the program, ensuring that each of the components are implemented in line with AWF practice and global standards, taking account of the local conditions. In addition, the incumbent will have support from AWF’s technical and administrative teams, who will provide guidance on implementation according to AWF standards, which are continuously strengthened to ensure alignment with global excellence in conservation and development practices.

The position is based in Voi and will report to the Country Director, Kenya.

Key Responsibilities

Landscape Leadership & Strategic Direction

  • Lead the implementation of AWF’s conservation program in the Tsavo landscape, ensuring alignment with AWF practice and global standards.
  • Provide strategic oversight for sustainable natural resource management, governance, and land-use planning.
  • Help grow AWF’s program by developing strategic partnerships and supporting long-term landscape strategies.
  • Represent AWF in county, local government, and cross-border forums to advance wildlife and biodiversity conservation.

Program Management & Compliance

  • Manage day-to-day program operations, including administration, human resources, finances, monitoring and evaluation, and donor reporting.
  • Ensure activities and outputs meet grant requirements, AWF policies, and government expectations.
  • Oversee project partners, sub-grantees, and collaborations with wildlife authorities to ensure coordinated implementation.
  • Work with Program Management and Grants teams to prepare annual work plans and budgets.

Technical Oversight & Community Engagement

  • Provide technical leadership on sustainable natural resource management and landscape monitoring systems.
  • Guide design and implementation of community livelihood programs that support wildlife and biodiversity conservation.
  • Strengthen and supervise stakeholder forums, ensuring effective engagement among wildlife authorities, communities, CBOs, and private sector partners.

Partnerships, Advocacy & External Relations

  • Engage with wildlife authorities, county governments, local governments, and conservation partners in Kenya.
  • Represent AWF at strategic forums and contribute to local policy development related to wildlife and natural resource management.
  • Work with Communications and Marketing teams to share landscape progress through reports, newsletters, and updates.

Resource Mobilization & Financial Oversight

  • Collaborate with the Program Design team to develop project concepts and support fundraising for the landscape.
  • Work with the Finance Department to develop, manage, and track landscape budgets.
  • Support development of high-quality donor proposals and ensure accurate, timely reporting.

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Conservation-related field. A master's is an advantage.
  • 10+ years of proven managerial, administrative, and field experience in conservation.
  • Experience managing multi-disciplinary teams.
  • A task-oriented, result-focused, and collaborative leadership approach with a thorough understanding of project management disciplines.
  • Experience and a proven success record in working on and implementing projects.
  • Experience in successfully managing large projects and delivering timely and verifiable results.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and mastery of global standards and practices for conservation, including in protected area planning and management, participatory land use planning, community conservation, rights-based approaches, and integrated conservation and development.
  • Proficiency in English and Kiswahili (Spoken and written) .
  • Demonstrated ability to build the capacity of multiple stakeholders and facilitate multi-stakeholder processes to engage in landscape planning and management.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, including the ability to build coalitions, negotiate, and manage conflict; familiarity with protocols associated with working in Kenya.
  • Genuine respect for the skills and perspectives of communities, partner organizations, and the private sector.
  • Conservancy management experience is a strong advantage.
  • Good report writing skills and working knowledge of computers and MS Office software package.
  • Unwavering integrity.
  • Experience working with Government agencies.
