~1 min readOur client, an AMLaw 50 firm, is looking to hire a Legal Billing Director at their offices in Midtown Manhattan. This is a full time, direct hire role paying an annual base salary of $250K to $315K plus a performance-based bonus and competitive benefits package.
The Billing Director is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the firm’s core billing operations, governance, and billing systems strategy at a top‑tier AMLaw firm. This role ensures accurate, timely, and compliant billing execution while partnering closely with firm leadership, partners, Pricing, Revenue Management, Collections, and eBilling to support revenue realization and client satisfaction.
The Billing Director provides strategic oversight of people, process, and systems, with deep expertise in Aderant Expert, and plays a critical role in advancing billing transparency, operational efficiency, and client service in a complex, high‑volume environment.
Responsibilities
~1 min read- Provide firmwide leadership over the end‑to‑end billing function, ensuring consistent execution of billing policies, standards, and controls across all practice groups and offices.
- Oversee the monthly billing close process, including prebill governance, billing timelines, escalation protocols, and quality assurance.
- Ensure billing practices align with approved rate structures, fee arrangements, client engagement terms, and firm policy.
- Serve as the senior escalation point for complex billing issues involving partners, high‑profile clients, or firm leadership.
- Lead, mentor, and develop Billing Managers, Supervisors, and Billing Specialists, fostering a high‑performance, service‑oriented culture.
- Establish staffing models, performance expectations, and training standards across the billing organization.
- Partner with the Associate Director of eBilling to ensure seamless coordination between traditional and electronic billing workflows, including shared standards, escalation protocols, and cross‑functional communication.
- Support succession planning and organizational development within the billing function.
- Serve as the firm’s senior billing systems leader, with overall ownership of Aderant Expert billing configuration, controls, and optimization.
- Partner with Financial Systems to enhance billing workflows, reporting, and system governance.
- Partner with Data Governance to oversee rate setup logic, billing templates, matter maintenance standards, and system‑driven billing rules to ensure accuracy and consistency.
- Drive system‑enabled efficiencies while maintaining data integrity and audit readiness.
- Partner with Pricing to ensure rate and fee arrangements are accurately reflected in billing, including system setup, billing workflows, and client invoices.
- Support implementation of approved rate changes, alternative fee arrangements, and client‑specific billing terms in coordination with Pricing and Revenue Management.
- Partner with the Associate Director of eBilling to align electronic billing practices with firm billing policies, rate strategy, and client requirements.
- Collaborate on billing initiatives that impact eBilling, including rate changes, new client onboarding, billing policy updates, and system enhancements.
- Participate jointly in escalations involving significant client billing issues or policy exceptions.
- Act as a trusted advisor to partners on billing strategy, invoice presentation, and resolution of complex billing matters.
- Collaborate with partners and Finance leadership to address sensitive client billing concerns and support strong client relationships.
- Develop and deliver billing metrics, dashboards, and performance reporting for Finance leadership and firm management.
- Establish, document, and maintain billing policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Lead billing‑related process improvement initiatives to reduce cycle times, minimize billing friction, and improve the client experience.
Requirements
~1 min read- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field required.
- 10+ years of progressive law firm billing experience, including senior leadership responsibility within a large, multi‑office firm.
- Extensive hands‑on experience with Aderant Expert required.
- Strong understanding of legal billing practices, rate structures, fee arrangements, and billing governance.
- Proven experience managing large teams in a high‑volume, partner‑driven environment.
- Excellent communication, judgment, and relationship‑management skills, with credibility at the partner and executive level.
