Overview of Position
We are seeking a dynamic and student-centered Spanish as a Second Language Teacher to work with middle school students whose Spanish proficiency is not yet sufficient for placement in the regular Spanish program. The teacher may support students across a wide range of language abilities, from complete beginners to advanced learners, through engaging, differentiated instruction that builds confidence and communicative competence.
The ideal candidate is passionate about language acquisition, understands the developmental needs of middle school students, and creates a positive, structured classroom environment that supports student growth. Familiarity with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is strongly preferred.
This is a one-year position with the possibility of extension beyond one year. The role may be either part-time or full-time depending on school needs still to be determined.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach Spanish language learners in middle school at varying levels of proficiency, from beginner to advanced
- Design and implement engaging lessons that develop students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills
- Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners and language backgrounds
- Assess student progress regularly and provide timely feedback to students and families
- Create a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages language development and student participation
- Utilize effective classroom management strategies appropriate for middle school students
- Collaborate with colleagues, counselors, and administrators to support student success
- Incorporate best practices in second-language acquisition and language instruction
- Use CEFR standards and descriptors to inform instruction and assessment when appropriate
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Spanish, Language Acquisition, or a related field
- Demonstrated experience teaching middle school students
- Experience teaching Spanish as a second or additional language
- Ability to teach students across a broad range of Spanish proficiency levels
- Strong classroom management and organizational skills
- Ability to build positive relationships with middle school students
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Familiarity with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) preferred
