Mechatronics Development Manager III
Quick Summary
Act as a manager and mentor for engineers on policies, procedures, and technical issues related to mechanical, electrical, and software integration. Plan, direct,
At ASI, we are revolutionizing industries with state-of-the-art autonomous robotics solutions. We deliver technologies that enhance safety, productivity, and efficiency. With our core values of Simplicity, Safety, Transparency, Humility, Attention to Detail and Growth guiding everything we do, we're shaping the future of automation in dynamic markets.
As the Mechatronics Development Manager on the Articulated Dump Truck (ADT) and Water Truck team, you will direct the work of embedded software, mechanical and harness, electronics, and system engineers building autonomous kits for off-road industrial vehicles. Your team handles the physical layer of autonomy: actuation of steering, braking, and hydraulics, sensor mounting and protection, wiring harnesses, and the electronics enclosures that all of it lives in. Because these machines operate on rough terrain, in dust and mud, and through wide temperature swings, ruggedization and serviceability carry as much weight in your design reviews as raw performance.
You will oversee your team's day-to-day responsibilities in designing, building, testing, deploying, maintaining, and supporting mechatronic systems and components that integrate mechanical, electrical, and software engineering principles. You will ensure that project and department milestones and goals are met while staying within approved budgets. Additionally, you will work to establish functional requirements, design specifications, and review solutions to ensure that organizational needs are met.
Responsibilities:
-
Act as a manager and mentor for engineers on policies, procedures, and technical issues related to mechanical, electrical, and software integration.
-
Plan, direct, and coordinate the daily activities of the mechatronics development team supporting ADT and water truck platforms.
-
Hold the team to industry best practices and ASI standards for mechatronics development, from concept through field support.
-
Own integration across mechanical, electrical, and software subsystems so vehicle kits operate as one system rather than assembled parts.
-
Evaluate designs for manufacturability, performance, cost, reliability, and serviceability in the field.
-
Establish functional requirements and design specifications, then review proposed solutions against them.
-
Partner with vehicle integration, autonomy software, and field teams to resolve issues found during commissioning and customer deployments.
-
Track project scope, schedule, and budget, and escalate risk to leadership before it reaches the customer.
-
Grow the engineers on your team through direct feedback, clear expectations, and deliberate assignment of work.
Required Qualifications:
-
Bachelor's degree in Mechatronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field.
-
5 years of individual contributor experience as a Mechatronics Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, Electrical Engineer, Robotics Engineer, or other related engineering field.
-
3+ years of experience managing teams of engineers in mechatronics development.
-
Comprehensive knowledge of mechatronics principles, including mechanical design, electrical systems, control systems, and embedded software.
-
Proficiency in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools for mechanical design, such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD, and simulation software.
-
Experience with embedded systems programming and software development, including proficiency in C, C++, or similar languages.
-
Working knowledge of vehicle electrical architecture, wiring harness design, and Controller Area Network (CAN) based communication.
-
Experience with Agile or other project management methodologies.
-
Strong project management skills, particularly with complex cross-disciplinary projects.
-
Strong communication skills, with the ability to work across engineering disciplines, field teams, and customers.
-
Preferred experience working in Robotics, Automation, or a similar field with regards to off-road heavy equipment such as mining, construction, or industrial vehicles.
Physical Requirements
-
Ability to remain in a stationary position at a computer workstation for extended periods.
-
Ability to operate a computer and other office productivity equipment continuously.
-
Ability to communicate and exchange information in person, via phone, and through electronic means.
-
Ability to traverse office, lab, shop, and field environments as required.
