Employees of Black Feminist Future work across the 501(c)(3) organization and its 501(c)(4) arm, Black Feminist Future Action Fund, to maintain alignment and cohesion of organizational strategy and objectives across both entities, as established by the Executive Director.

Staffing Philosophy:
Black Feminist Future is a movement organization grounded in a left, queer, anti-capitalist Black feminist politic. We are seeking senior leaders who are deeply grounded in Black feminist praxis and committed to ongoing development. All staff are organizers who understand their role as an assignment rather than simply a job, and who work within structures guided by our BEACON plan to advance systemic change through coordinated c3 and c4 strategies. Senior leaders are responsible for stewarding organizational coherence and people-centered leadership across the institution.

Position Summary
The Senior Manager of Membership leads BFF’s membership governance, engagement, recruitment, retention, and membership operations work, playing a central role in building, sustaining, and activating a powerful base of Black feminists across the country. This position is responsible for the design, coordination, and implementation of member governance structures, membership systems, and engagement strategies that advance BFF’s power building strategy and theory of change.

Grounded in transformative base building and Black feminist organizing, the Senior Manager of Membership builds an energized, intergenerational, and diverse membership base focused on advancing Black feminisms, building power, and taking action. This role partners closely with Transformative Organizing leadership and cross departmental teams to operationalize a long term vision for material and structural change through campaigns, governance, and mobilization.

The Senior Manager of Membership serves as a key steward of BFF’s member governance ecosystem, including the Governance Hive and other member led bodies, ensuring alignment with organizational values, Meridians, and strategic priorities. 

Key Responsibilities

Membership Strategy, Governance, and Power Building

  • Build, implement, and manage projects, initiatives, and governance focused plans related to membership that include data informed goals, clear metrics, research guided tactics, and program timelines.
  • Lead membership efforts that advance BFF’s strategic pillar of shifting the material and structural conditions for Black women, girls, and gender expansive people through campaigns, policy engagement, and mobilizations.
  • Make determinations and recommendations that support the overall success of the Organizing and Membership functions.
  • Lead and coordinate the Member Governance Body, a member body focused on developing and practicing Black feminist governance, leadership, and accountability.

Membership Recruitment, Engagement, Retention, and Political Education

  • Implement BFF’s membership strategy as it relates to member recruitment, retention, engagement, onboarding, and political education.
    • Utilize member engagement strategies to attract, retain, and activate members and supporters into meaningful actions that build collective power.
  • Cultivate and deepen members’ understanding of their role within BFF and how they can meaningfully contribute to organizational goals.
  • Support and manage the Member Governance Body members around governance, leadership development, and organizational stewardship.
  • Design and implement strategies to increase both the size and depth of the membership base and participation, including outreach, base building activities, member cultivation, and ongoing support in collaboration with the Transformative Organizing team.
  • Plan and support virtual and in-person member orientations, open houses and information sessions, member onboarding, and member political education.
  • Engage new members through member political education and kitchen table kickbacks.
  • Cultivate and deepen members' understanding of their role and how they can meaningfully contribute to the organization.
  • Evaluate member feedback and sentiment to inform engagement, retention, and recruitment strategies.

Membership Programming and Leadership Development

  • Manage the coordination and implementation of the Member Congress, Member Governance & Council meetings, member trainings, and leadership development opportunities.
  • Support the political education and leadership development of members through intentional programming rooted in Black feminist analysis and organizing traditions.
  • Work in collaboration with internal teams to design and implement the administrative and programmatic components of membership, including a code of conduct, shared values, member benefits, and leadership ladders of engagement.
  • In collaboration with the Senior Manager of Organizing, assist BFF members in hosting On the Road to Get Free Activations;

Membership Operations, Systems, and Data Management

  • Use BFF’s database, member portal, and digital engagement tools to manage, track, and strengthen membership participation and leadership development.
  • Support the development and maintenance of systems that track member engagement, governance participation, and leadership growth.
  • Ensure accurate documentation, reporting, and communication related to membership activities and governance outcomes.
  • Ensure that new members are engaged, onboarded, and receive the first point of contact with BFF.
  • Organize and manage member dues, lapsed and dropped membership renewals, and member communication via email, phone banking, text banking, and member newsletter support.
  • Manage systems to track and monitor prospective, new and current membership data entry, application processes, membership growth, engagement, and leadership development.
  • Support with the audit and evaluation of membership programming and governance participation; use learnings to inform strategy and innovation.

Organizational Leadership and Representation

  • Represent BFF with members, partners, and external audiences in alignment with organizational values, Meridians, and political orientation.
  • Serve as an internal ambassador for BFF’s change management processes, supporting alignment, transparency, and accountability across teams.
  • Partner closely with managers and senior leadership to amplify and enact a shared vision for long term organizational growth and power building.

Cross-Department & Team Collaboration

  • Share relevant data and stories with BFF’s Resource Mobilization Department  to document the impact of BFF’s Memberships;
  • Engage in cross articulation with the Senior Manager of Campaigns and the Senior Manager of Organizing to develop a politicized, activated, and engaged strong membership base ;
  • Mobilize members in BFF-National & Local campaigns, actions, and organizing efforts that move forward BFF strategic priorities.
  • Support alignment between Campaigns, Base Building and Member Governance decisions.
  • Support messaging and communication of BFF’s Membership with the BFF Communications Department.
