Job Summary:
Reporting directly to the BN Shelter Home Manager, the Intake Worker plays a key frontline role in ensuring the safe, welcoming, and supportive operation of the Shelter Home. Working from a Feminist, Anti-racist/Anti-oppressive and trauma-informed framework, the Intake Worker provides reception and administrative support, completes client intake, offers emotional support and crisis response, and helps maintain a positive and cooperative residential environment. This position is often the first point of contact for women and children accessing the BN Shelter Home and is responsible for upholding safety, confidentiality, professionalism, and compassion at all times.
Skills & Qualifications:
- Grade 12 or equivalent and or Business Administration and/or another related field
- Minimum two years’ related experience
- Previous experience working with women and children.
- Ability to provide emotional support, active listening, and crisis response.
- Ability to work cooperatively within a team environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and the ability to manage multiple cases and intakes.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Experience working respectfully with indigenous communities, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and local members.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation (e.g., Child and Family Services, Residential Tenancies, Occupational Health and Safety, etc.).
Duties & Responsibilities:
The Intake Worker shall:
- Conduct intake and initial assessment/screening
- Work with the clients to obtain all relevant information
- Maintain intake availability
- Record and document all appropriate information
- Work closely with Shelter Home Counsellors and assist with documentation
- Providing referral information for other community resources
- Assist in determining status and eligibility for services
- Manage the main office and front-desk operations, ensuring a welcoming, safe, and organized environment.
- Answer phones, respond to inquiries, and provide information and support.
- Complete filing, report writing, data entry in a timely and confidential manner.
- Assist with monitor building access and maintain security procedures to ensure the safety of all women and children.
- Provide women and their children with emotional support, active listening, and assist with referrals to appropriate services.
Conditions of Employment:
- Valid First Aid/CPR certificate
- Provide clear Vulnerable Sector check
- Valid Class G Ontario Driver’s license
- Ability to travel and provide own transportation
