The Role
As a Designer, you will play a key role in delivering user-centred digital experiences that align with the British Council’s design strategy and business objectives. Leveraging expertise in areas such as user experience, content, visual, interaction design, or user research, you will translate business needs into intuitive and engaging design solutions. Working collaboratively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders, you will ensure that all designs are informed by research, user feedback, and a deep understanding of user needs, behaviours, and interaction patterns.
The role sits within the Digital and Technology Directorate, which leads the British Council’s digital transformation and technology strategy. As part of the Product unit, you will contribute to the development of innovative digital products and services that support a customer-centric agenda. You will collaborate with global teams to create accessible, scalable, and impactful solutions that enhance customer experiences, drive organisational growth, and deliver value through technology, design excellence, and continuous innovation.
Main responsibilities
The role is responsible for delivering high-quality, user-centred design solutions across digital products and services, ensuring alignment with established design principles, methodologies, and industry standards. Working across disciplines such as user experience, content, or visual design, the role collaborates closely with product teams to define requirements, shape user journeys, and deliver innovative solutions informed by user research, insights, and performance data. The role champions inclusive design practices, promotes user-centred thinking, and contributes to the development of scalable design systems and interaction patterns that enhance consistency and usability across digital platforms.
The role requires strong stakeholder engagement and cross-functional collaboration with teams across Digital & Technology, Product Management, Marketing, and other business areas. It focuses on identifying opportunities to improve digital experiences through research, analytics, and user feedback, while implementing solutions that enhance usability and customer satisfaction. The role also promotes innovation by leveraging emerging design trends and technologies, provides guidance on user-centred design methodologies, and supports the development of digital capability across the organisation through knowledge sharing, consultancy, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Role specific skills
User Experience (UX) Design: Strong understanding of user-centred design principles, including user research, journey mapping, information architecture, wireframing, and prototyping.
Visual Design: Ability to create engaging and accessible digital experiences through effective use of typography, colour, layout, grids, and brand identity.
Content Design: Skilled in identifying content needs, defining content strategies, and testing and refining content to ensure relevance, usability, and scalability.
Interaction Design: Experience designing intuitive and accessible interaction patterns, user flows, and digital experiences across products and platforms.
User Research: Ability to conduct discovery activities, gather user insights, facilitate usability testing, and apply findings to improve products and services.
Design Thinking: Familiarity with design thinking methodologies to solve problems and drive innovation through a user-centred approach.
Strategic Thinking: Ability to align design decisions with business goals, customer needs, and organisational priorities.
Accessibility & Inclusive Design: Working knowledge of WCAG standards and accessibility best practices to ensure digital experiences are inclusive and accessible for all users.
Prototyping & Testing: Experience creating prototypes and validating solutions through user testing and feedback.
Data-Informed Design: Ability to leverage user insights, analytics, and performance metrics to continuously improve digital experiences.
Role specific knowledge and experience
Minimum/essential
* Proven experience: Demonstrable experience in at least one digital design discipline demonstrating a track record of successfully delivering design projects.
* User-centred design knowledge: Solid understanding of user-centred design principles, methodologies, and practices, with experience conducting user research, creating personas, and designing user flows and/or content design.
* Collaboration and communication: Excellent collaboration and communication skills to effectively interact with cross-functional teams, stakeholders, and clients, translating business requirements into effective design solutions.
* Data-driven decision making: Experience in leveraging data and analytics to drive design decisions, using qualitative and quantitative research methods to gather insights and optimise designs.
* UX research skills: Experience in planning and conducting usability testing, and other UX research methods to inform design decisions and identify areas for improvement.
* Industry knowledge: Awareness of emerging design trends, technologies, and industry advancements, keeping up with the evolving digital landscape and incorporating innovative ideas into design strategies.
* Technical proficiency: Knowledge and ability to use appropriate design tools and software.
Desirable
* Strategic thinking: Ability to think strategically and align design initiatives with overall business goals, considering market trends, user insights, and competitive landscape.
* Design/Component library: Experience of working with design systems and componentbased design approaches, enabling the creation of scalable and reusable design assets.
Language Requirements
The British Council systems and global processes operate in English. Written and verbal proficiency in English is required.
Education
Minimum
* Bachelor’s degree in design, or a related field, or equivalent experience in a related discipline.
* Commitment to continuous learning through online courses, workshops, and industry conferences to stay updated on evolving design practices and industry trends.
Desirable
* Master’s degree in design or a related field, providing advanced knowledge and specialised expertise in design disciplines.
