Role Description / Purpose
The British Council Singapore is seeking an experienced, enthusiastic, and dedicated English language teacher to join our teaching team on a part-time hourly paid basis. The role is responsible for delivering high-quality teaching and ensuring effective learning experiences for all students while contributing to the British Council’s reputation as a leading provider of English language education.
Successful candidates will demonstrate strong professional teaching skills, a commitment to continuous learning and development, and the ability to work collaboratively as a positive and supportive member of the teaching team. In addition to achieving outstanding learning outcomes, the role supports the wider aims of the British Council and its mission to build trust, understanding, and cultural connections between the UK and countries around the world.
Teaching responsibilities may include a range of programmes such as:
* One-to-one lessons for Young Learners and Adults
* Young Learner enrichment courses for pre-school, primary, and secondary students
* Young Learner English camps for international students aged 4 to 16
* Business English and General English programmes for adults
* IELTS preparation courses
We welcome candidates with experience in some or all of the above areas and who are willing to teach during evenings and weekends as required.
The role purpose is to:
* Promote and ensure high-quality teaching and effective learning for all students
* Build and maintain the British Council’s reputation for excellence in English language teaching
* Support the wider objectives of the British Council and its cultural relations mission by creating opportunities, building connections, and fostering mutual understanding across cultures
Role Accountabilities:
The post holder will deliver high-quality English language lessons to individuals and groups of up to 18 students, adapting materials and teaching approaches to meet diverse learner needs and using technology appropriately to enhance learning. They will support positive learner outcomes by providing engaging, professional, and effective instruction that aligns with British Council standards and contributes to the successful delivery of a range of English language programmes.
The role also includes completing class registers and other administrative tasks within agreed timeframes, while supporting the British Council’s global English strategy through the consistent delivery of teaching excellence. The post holder will actively engage in professional development activities, share best practices with colleagues, and contribute to strengthening the British Council’s reputation as a global leader in English language teaching.
Qualifications & Experience:
Essentials
* Undergraduate/University degree.
* A Certificate in Cambridge Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA), a Trinity Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CertTESOL); or an equivalent EFL teaching qualification; or a PGCE/PGDE with a practical component (QTS); or a B.Ed in Primary, Secondary, or Early Childhood Education; or a Diploma in Education from the Singapore Ministry of Education.
* A minimum of 2 years post-certificate i.e. CELTA experience gained from teaching a variety of age groups and levels from young learners through to adults.
* A minimum of 2 years experience teaching Young Learners.
* Proficiency in English equivalent to a Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) C2 level or IELTS Band 8/9 in each of 4 sections of the academic module.

Desirables
* Recognised diploma in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) i.e. Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (DELTA).
* PGCE/B.Ed in Primary/Secondary relevant subject.
* Certificate in English Language Teaching to Young Learners (CELTYL) or Teaching Young Learners Extension Certificate (TYLEC).
* Specialist experience teaching Early Years, Primary and Secondary Young Learners.
* Familiarity with the Singaporean education system.
* Experience of teaching adults, Business English experience.
* IELTS preparation experience.
* Experience teaching one to one or small groups.
Important Information:
* Location: Singapore - Napier Road Centre. Teachers may be expected to work in more than one British Council centre. They are also likely to work in more than one location, e.g. British Council centre and a partner institution.
* Salary: SGD 55.29 to 68.40 per hour, plus 17% CPF. The hourly rate offered will depend on the candidate's qualifications, certifications, and relevant teaching experience.
* Contracted hours per week: Up to 20 hours per week.
* Working Hours: Shifts will be assigned within the centre's operating hours of Monday to Friday (9:00 AM to 9:30 PM), Saturday (9:00 AM to 3:45 PM), and Sunday (9:00 AM to 5:45 PM). Actual working hours will vary based on roster and operational requirements.
* Local restriction on employment: Candidates must have the pre-existing right to live and work in Singapore. The British Council is unable to provide visa sponsorship or relocation support.
* Contract type: Fixed term contract (2 years)
* Start date: 26 October 2026
* Additional information: Throughout the year, there may be the opportunity for regular hourly paid work on a range of different products according to demand. Once the teacher accepts a class, the expectation is that they will be available for the entire course until the end of that course.
