Why this role is special
Budibase is hiring Software Engineers to help build Budibase Agents: AI-native workflows that help internal operations teams move faster.
Budibase is open source with 28k GitHub stars, fully remote, and focused on helping teams automate real operational work with agents, apps, automations, and integrations.
This is a high-ownership role for engineers who want to build real AI product infrastructure, not demos or prototypes. You’ll work across agents, automations, integrations, permissions, observability, and the builder experience.
We’re hiring 2–3 engineers for this area and are open to strong mid-level and senior candidates, especially in Belfast and across Northern Ireland.
Why this is a rare opportunity:
- Work on AI-native product at the centre of Budibase’s strategy
- Build in open source, with 28k GitHub stars
- Fully remote, with company get-togethers in places like Lisbon and Amsterdam
- Optional 4-day work week
- £50k–£90k salary + stock options, depending on experience
- 24 months runway and close to profitability
- High ownership in a small product engineering team
Company Description
Budibase is an open-source operations platform for building agents, apps, and automations. Teams use Budibase to connect to their data, build internal tools, automate workflows, and create AI-powered processes that run across the systems they already use. Our product is used by teams that need to move faster without giving up control, security, or flexibility.
Budibase started as a low-code platform for internal tools. Today, we’re expanding that foundation into a broader platform for operational work: apps for humans, automations for repeatable processes, and AI agents for work that requires context, judgment, tools, and human approval. We’re building for teams such as RevOps, ITOps, Finance, Support, Customer Success, Operations, and Admin teams - the people who keep companies running every day.
Why this role matters
Every company has operational work that is repetitive, fragmented, and too dependent on manual coordination. A request comes in through Slack, a form, an email, or a ticket. Someone checks context in a CRM, spreadsheet, database, billing tool, knowledge base, or internal system. They make a decision, ask for approval, update a record, notify a team, and leave some kind of audit trail. Budibase exists to make that kind of work faster.
AI agents are a major part of that future. Not generic chatbots, but agents that can operate inside real workflows: using tools, following instructions, respecting permissions, escalating to humans, and handing work off to automations when deterministic execution is needed.
These workflows exist across many teams: RevOps, IT, HR, Finance, Support, Customer Success, Operations, and Admin teams.
What you'll work on
You’ll help build Budibase Agents and the product experiences around them. That could include:
- Building and improving the agent builder
- Helping agents use tools, integrations, APIs, and Budibase automations
- Designing experiences for instructions, knowledge, tools, approvals, permissions, and escalation
- Improving reliability across model providers, tool calls, structured outputs, retries, and errors
- Making agent behaviour easier to debug, observe, and trust
- Building integrations into tools like Slack, Teams, Salesforce, HubSpot, Stripe, Jira, Zendesk, Google Workspace, and Microsoft 365
- Creating UX that makes powerful AI workflows understandable to non-expert users
- Working on operational use cases such as approvals, onboarding, data updates, triage, routing, enrichment, reporting, and internal requests
This is not about building toy chatbots. It’s about helping teams automate real work safely.
The kind of person we're looking for
We’re looking for a Software Engineer with strong engineering fundamentals, good product instincts, and genuine curiosity about AI. Someone who is excited by AI, but understands that production software still needs clear UX, reliable systems, sensible defaults, permissions, observability, and great debugging.
You might be a good fit if you:
- Have strong full-stack engineering fundamentals
- Use AI coding tools regularly and are curious about how they change engineering
- Are interested in agents, workflow automation, internal tools, and operational software
- Are comfortable in a modern TypeScript/JavaScript stack
- Care deeply about product quality and user experience
- Like ambiguous problems and can turn them into shipped product
- Can think across frontend, backend, integrations, data, and product
- Communicate clearly and write things down
- Enjoy working with designers, product people, and customers
- Bring positive energy to fast-moving technical problems
Useful experience
You do not need to tick every box. We care more about curiosity, pace, judgment, and ownership than a perfect keyword match. Relevant experience could include:
- Building full-stack SaaS products.
- Building with LLMs, agents, tool calling, structured outputs, RAG, evals, or prompt/instruction design.
- Working with TypeScript, Node.js, React, Svelte, or similar technologies.
- Building integrations with tools like Slack, Teams, Salesforce, HubSpot, Stripe, Jira, Zendesk, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, or internal APIs.
- Working on workflow builders, automation tools, internal tools, low-code platforms, or developer tools.
- Designing approval flows, request systems, audit logs, permissions, or operational dashboards.
- Working on software for operations teams such as RevOps, IT, HR, Finance, Support, or Customer Success.
- Contributing to open-source or self-hosted software.
What success looks like
In your first few weeks, you’ll be shipping meaningful improvements to Budibase Agents and the surrounding product experience. You’ll help make it easier for a team to create an agent that can receive a request, understand the context, use the right tools, ask for approval when needed, complete the work, and leave behind a clear record. Longer term, you’ll help Budibase become the best open-source platform for teams who want AI agents that work safely with private tools, private data, and human oversight.
This is an important hire. We’re not just replacing engineering capacity. We’re looking for someone who can bring curiosity, craft, and positive energy, especially as AI agents become one of the most important parts of Budibase.
We’re especially interested in speaking with engineers in Belfast and across Northern Ireland. Budibase is fully remote, but we’d love to build a strong local engineering presence and are happy to meet candidates for coffee in and around Belfast.
