Quick Summary
The Agency
The Calgary John Howard Society (CJHS) is a charity that reduces crime and makes Calgary communities safer by helping youth and adults make positive changes and move away from criminal behaviour. We do this by addressing the root causes of crime through housing, education, employment programs and support so that individuals have alternatives to breaking the law. CJHS is committed to restorative justice and an organizational environment that recognizes the dignity and worth of each person. CJHS values diversity and inclusion and welcomes qualified applicants from all walks of life.
The Program
Berkana House is a Community Residential Facility (CRF) for women on conditional release. Berkana House fosters a holistic environment of healing, empowerment, and respect. We are dedicated to supporting women to positively transition from prison back to the community. Berkana House offers a mother-child program, and children may reside with their mothers. An independent living model allows residents the opportunity to develop essential life skills while meeting the conditions of release that have been imposed. Staff are on-site and available 24 hours a day.
The Position
The Caseworker will work in an integrated and collaborative way within the Berkana House team, wider CJHS team, the Calgary Parole Office, and the community to ensure Berkana House residents are supported in their integration journeys and are afforded the opportunity to address individual risk factors. Reporting to the Team Lead, the Caseworker is responsible for the case management of residents, day-to-day shift duties, and resident support and supervision. They will have an assigned caseload and will work closely with individual residents to conduct assessments, goal setting, and action planning utilizing a strength-based and trauma-informed approach. The Caseworker will support all residents of Berkana House with day-to-day activities, referrals and other informal therapeutic interventions. The ability to adapt to both routine and crisis situations as they arise is vital to the role. As this is a residential facility, shift work and other duties will be required, including basic household chores.
The successful candidate will have relevant post-secondary education and/or relevant experience in the human services field. They will demonstrate an understanding of women-centered practice in the criminal justice system. The Caseworker will demonstrate a meaningful understanding of the CJHS Practice Framework Principles: Trauma-Informed, Restoration and Transformation, Cultural Respect and Inclusion, Natural Supports and Social Inclusion, and Dignity and Respect, and how these principles may be applied to the target population in a community residential facility. Brain Story Certification considered an asset.
This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) that requires shift work (primarily daytime and evening; however, also the occasional overnight). The Caseworker will participate in an On-Call rotation. A current criminal record check and an enhanced reliability screening (through the Government of Canada) are required. Your past does not define your future. A criminal record will not disqualify you from employment with us; we evaluate each application individually.
Applications will be accepted until September 11, 2026.
