Geographic Information System (GIS) Technician

Under the direction of the GIS Manager, assists in the creation and maintenance of the County’s geographic information for use in the county-wide Geographic Information System (GIS). Provides assistance and various mapping products to citizens and customers. Assists with the integration of new GIS technology into daily operations throughout the County.
Responsibilities
~1 min read- →Creates, updates, and maintains the County’s geographic information, including but not limited to; digitizing, data conversion, and geodatabase design.
- →Assists in the implementation of GIS enterprise standards that support statewide
- →Provides support to county departments, local units of government, and citizens on the use of GIS services and procedures.
- →Answers the phone and greets the public as needed in a manner that fosters good customer service.
- →Attends GIS related meetings.
- →Active participation in professional GIS organizations and activities.
- →Creates and distributes maps for relevant parties as needed.
- →Other job duties as assigned.
Requirements
~1 min read- Bachelor’s Degree in Geography/Geographic Information Systems, Planning, Computer Science, or closely related area.
- One or more years of experience working with an enterprise-wide GIS program utilizing the ESRI software platform and with a solid understanding of GIS concepts.
- A working knowledge of and ability to do projects utilizing Global Positioning System (GPS) devices.
- Ability to read and understand a legal description is preferred.
- Possess a valid Michigan vehicle operator’s license and an acceptable driving record.
- Proficient computer skills necessary to effectively utilize spreadsheets, databases, word processing, computerized accounting software and create presentations.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with various levels of County personnel, vendors, elected officials, and the general public.

- Normal office environment with little, if any, discomfort due to heat, noise and the like.
- Extended work days (beyond eight hours/day) and irregular work hours are occasionally required.
- On-call availability to handle work problems, attend meetings, handle emergencies/crisis situations, etc. at all hours is occasionally required.
- Periodic travel is required.
