The Cancer Support Community (CSC), an international nonprofit organization headquartered in Washington, D.C., is seeking an ambitious and detail-oriented individual who is passionate about making a difference in the lives of people impacted by cancer for our Director, Program and Health Equity. 



JOB SUMMARY: 

The Director, Program and Health Equity is responsible for leading the implementation, advancement, and continuous integration of psychosocial cancer care across programs and initiatives within the organization and its network of partners. This role serves as a key program leader, accountable for ensuring that all initiatives are grounded in evidence-based psychosocial support approaches that address the emotional, social, and practical needs of individuals impacted by cancer, while advancing health equity and whole-person care outcomes. 

The Director oversees a portfolio of programs, driving implementation, management, and continuous improvement to ensure alignment with organizational priorities and measurable impact. Working in close partnership with internal teams, Network Partners, funders, and external stakeholders, this role translates strategy into execution, supporting program design, strengthening psychosocial components, and expanding access to high-quality, equitable care. 

In addition, the Director plays a critical role in partnership and funding development, program evaluation, and scaling of effective models. This position also contributes to departmental operations and the enhancement of systems and processes that strengthen program delivery, promote innovation in psychosocial oncology, and advance organizational impact. 

Reporting to the Senior Director, Program and Health Equity, this position plays an important role in advancing CSC's programmatic goals while supporting operational excellence and impact across the department and network. 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  

Program Leadership, Psychosocial Oncology & Continuous Improvement

  • Lead the planning, implementation, and oversight of complex programs and initiatives, with a strong emphasis on advancing psychosocial oncology leadership. 
  • Ensure programs integrate evidence-based approaches that address emotional, social, and practical needs, and drive continuous improvement through data, evaluation, and emerging trends to better serve diverse populations. 


Partnerships, Community Health Worker Integration & Strategic Growth 

  • Collaborate with internal teams, Network Partners, and stakeholders to implement and expand programs. 
  • Oversee the integration and training of Community Health Workers to increase access to navigation and address practical barriers to care. 
  • Develop strategic partnerships and support funding efforts to scale equitable, high-impact programs. 


Operations, Knowledge Dissemination & Team Leadership 

  • Strengthen program delivery through oversight of reporting, contracts, and budget tracking. 
  • Lead dissemination efforts, including presentations, publications, and external representation, to advance psychosocial oncology practice and program visibility. 
  • Provide leadership and supervision to staff, consultants, and partners to ensure high-quality execution and organizational impact.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

Program Leadership & Execution 

Demonstrated ability to lead multiple programs and initiatives simultaneously, ensuring effective implementation, stakeholder engagement, and successful achievement of program goals. 

Project Management 

Strong project management skills, including planning, coordination, timeline management, budget oversight, and resource stewardship. Ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining attention to detail and accountability for results. 

Communication & Dissemination 

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience developing presentations, reports, educational materials, or other dissemination products. Knowledge of plain language writing and health literacy best practices preferred. 

Collaboration & Relationship Building 

Highly effective interpersonal skills, with the ability to quickly develop productive relationships across internal teams, CSC Network Partners, and external stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to foster collaboration and build consensus around shared goals. 

Analytical Thinking & Problem Solving 

Ability to assess needs, interpret information from multiple sources, identify practical solutions, and make sound recommendations that support program effectiveness and continuous improvement. 

Leadership & Initiative 

Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, take ownership of assigned work, and move complex projects forward in a dynamic environment. Experience providing guidance, coaching, or supervision to staff, contractors, consultants, or interns preferred. 

Community Engagement & Health Equity 

Experience working with diverse communities and stakeholders, including medically underserved populations. Understanding of health equity principles and experience adapting programs, services, or resources to better meet community needs. 


TECHNICAL SKILLS:

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, andTeams.

Experience with project management and collaboration platforms (e.g., Smartsheet,Monday.com)

EDUCATION: 

Master's degree in social or behavioral sciences (e.g., Social Work, Public Health, Psychology, or a related health services or social science field) required. 

EXPERIENCE: 

Minimum of three (3) years of experience in psychosocial program development and management, including responsibility for leading complex projects, managing partner relationships, and 

 

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES/REGISTRATIONS: 

CITI training certificate, or completion of CITI training within 3 months of hire, required.

Dependent on experience. WORK LOCATION:
