Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is looking for a Financial Mentor in Training to join our team and deliver CAP's Debt Help service to individuals and whānau experiencing financial hardship across Aotearoa.


If you're passionate about helping people, enjoy building meaningful relationships, and are eager to learn, we'll provide the training, support, and mentoring you need to become a confident and capable Financial Mentor.


No two days are the same in this collaborative and rewarding role. Working alongside experienced Financial Mentors, you'll learn how to support clients through their financial journey by providing practical, client-centred guidance that empowers them to move towards long-term financial wellbeing.


Reporting to the Financial Mentor Manager, you'll be supported to develop your skills while learning CAP's Debt Help model, financial mentoring best practice, and the frameworks that guide our service.

Key areas of responsibility include:


  • Support clients throughout their journey with CAP
  • Identify client needs and provide tailored support to help achieve long-term financial wellbeing  
  • Collaborate effectively within CAP’s Team of 3 model (Financial Mentor, Coach, and Client) to achieve best outcomes for clients
  • Work with a caseload of clients with supervision and support
  • Participating in ongoing training and professional development to build your knowledge, skills, and confidence as a Financial Mentor
  • Applying CAP's financial mentoring frameworks, policies, and best practice in your day-to-day work
  • Contribute positively to a collaborative, values-driven team focused on achieving excellent client outcomes

You’ll also bring relevant experience for the role:


  • Experience in a people-focused role, such as customer service, banking, community services, case management, coaching, social services, or another relevant field
  • Financial Mentoring experience is an advantage but not essential as we'll provide the training and support to help you succeed
  • An understanding of, or willingness to learn about, financial systems, institutions, and services in Aotearoa
  • An interest in the wellbeing, community, or social services sector and a passion for supporting people experiencing financial hardship
  • Exceptional relationship-building and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively within a team to achieve positive client outcomes
  • A growth mindset and a genuine commitment to learning, professional development, and continuous improvement
  • Sound numeracy and literacy skills, with confidence working with financial information and written documentation
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • The ability to balance empathy and compassion with professionalism, sound judgement, and appropriate boundaries
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and maintain accurate records
