The Nonprofit Underwriter is responsible for driving profitable new business growth and managing the performance of an assigned portfolio of nonprofit agents and producers. Serving as the primary relationship manager for assigned agency partners, this role combines underwriting expertise, strategic agency management, and portfolio oversight to influence production, profitability, and portfolio quality. The Underwriter partners with agents to develop new business opportunities, improve submission quality, and expand market presence while ensuring compliance with Company underwriting authority, pricing standards, and corporate objectives. This position plays a critical role in generating the majority of the Company's nonprofit new business production through a broad network of agency relationships.

 

This role will require hybrid attendance in one of our AmTrust office locations, ideally Overland Park, KS or Scottsdale, AZ.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary relationship manager for an assigned portfolio of agents and producers, developing strong partnerships that drive profitable new business growth, portfolio performance, and long-term agency engagement.
  • Monitor and analyze agency and portfolio performance metrics, including new business production, quote activity, hit ratios, profitability, and growth trends, and implement strategies to improve results.
  • Identify, develop, and capitalize on new business opportunities within the nonprofit marketplace by partnering with agents and producers to expand market presence and achieve production goals.
  • Write and retain a profitable book of business through solid risk analysis, pricing and servicing. This includes but is not limited to: timely review of referrals, performing risk and portfolio quality audits, and managing overall agent portfolio as relates to profitability, hit ratios and pricing initiatives.
  • Maintain compliance with state filings and adhere to corporate underwriting and pricing guidelines. Operate within written authority grant and make referrals to Nonprofit and Home Office Underwriting as required.
  • In collaboration with Nonprofit Management, develop and implement a business plan for the assigned agents and geographic area and share accountability with team in meeting goals.
  • Coach agents on underwriting appetite and protocols in conjunction with corporate training guidelines, while supporting the development of profitable new business opportunities and improved submission quality.
  • Collaborate with the Nonprofit and Regional teams to develop, manage and maintain outside client relationships. This may include traveling in the territory to meet with agents, producers and nonprofit associations or organizations.
  • Provide professional, timely and courteous communication and service to external clients and cross-departmental staff to successfully resolve issues pertaining to policyholders and agents.
  • Provide pertinent information and guidance to support staff required to process coverage requests in accordance with service guidelines.
  • Assist in gathering and communicating competitive market information.

Requirements

  • 3-5 years of commercial lines property and casualty experience
  • Proven track record of building strong relationships with agency partners through exceptional performance and unmatched reliability
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent Insurance Industry experience.
  • Technical command of underwriting liability, professional, property, automobile, and umbrella exposures. Nonprofit specific experience is a plus, but not required
  • Ability to interpret and analyze information to make an informed risk selection and pricing decisions
  • Ability to participate in and contribute to organizational business planning
  • Respect for confidential information
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Enjoyment of being part of a team of like-minded nonprofit insurance professionals
  • Ability to travel within the assigned territory and to the Home Office as required
  • Openness to attain a CPCU, CIC or similar insurance designation
