The Pre-Medical Summer Scholar supports the PAFP–DUCOM Enrichment Experience, a structured 8-week summer program for sophomore pre-medical students. The Scholar engages in four supervised components: health policy research, medical seminar attendance, community service through OCHIE, and outpatient clinical shadowing. The program is designed to build skills, professional exposure, and documented experiences required for competitive medical school application. Participants receive a $3,500 stipend..
- Conduct supervised health policy research; select a topic, perform a literature review, and produce a 3–4 page policy brief with recommendations. Deliver a 10-minute oral presentation in Week 8.
- Attend assigned medical seminars and submit a 1-page written reflection per session (minimum 6 reflections; at least 2 must address health equity content).
- Participate in OCHIE-coordinated community health activities; maintain a bi-weekly community service log submitted to supervisor.
- Complete outpatient clinical shadowing with a physician; maintain a weekly encounter log (submitted each Friday by 5:00 PM); participate in post-clinic debrief conversations.
- Submit all required program documentation on schedule, including mid-program community reflection, policy brief drafts, final clinical reflection (750 words), and complete all contractor/onboarding paperwork in Week 1.

Requirements

- Prior exposure to community health, research, or clinical settings; experience with academic writing
- Ability to conduct literature searches and summarize peer-reviewed sources
- Basic written and oral communication skills; ability to complete structured written assignments
- Familiarity with APA citation style; demonstrated interest in health equity or underserved communities; strong interpersonal skills for professional healthcare settings
- Typically sitting at a desk/table
- University City - Philadelphia, PA
This is a Part-Time per diem/casual position classified as Non-Exempt. The offered pay is based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
