The Cytotechnologist II examines slides microscopically to detect abnormal, atypical cells that may be present.

 

This position is located at Bayfront Hospital in St Pete, FL

Responsibilities

  • Microscopically examines human cellular samples in accordance with departmental procedures and policies.
  • Prepares specimens for rapid on-site cytologic exam (ROSE).
  • Stages resection and dissection specimens for histological assessment.
  • Considers clinical history of the patient, marks pertinent findings; makes preliminary cytologic interpretation in consultation with attending pathologist.
  • Follows pathology reports and communicates with endoscopists and pathologists when there is discrepancy between onsite and final interpretations.
  • Liaison between lab and outside facilities when specimens are sent out for expert adjudication and reports back to endoscopists.
  • Performs and documents all quality control and prevention maintenance procedures.
  • Performs quality control checks.
  • Assists in various research projects; performs other related duties including teaching of endoscopy staff and visiting trainees.
  • Provides interpretation of special test results, such as assessment of mucosal biopsies on-site, that will assist with endoscopist intra-procedure decision-making.
  • Maintains research database pertaining to endoscopic specimens procured at EUS, ERCP, and documents research related data, is preferred.
  • Use telepathology for emergency consultations.
  • Use digital analysis for tissue quantification and categorization for research.
  • Performs specimen receiving and processing.
  • Regularly reports all abnormal findings to the cytopathologist and patient caregiver as required.
  • Assumes one or more of the following responsibilities: projects, teaching, tech in charge, and evaluation of new technology.
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
  • Maintains proper inventory of supplies.
  • Responsible for maintaining an active role in the laboratory quality improvement program including performance and evaluation of key quality indicators.
  • Follows the established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agencies requirements.
  • Practices infection control and safety practices and keeps a clean and organized work area.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient record, hospital, and departmental matters at all times.
  • Works with laboratory staff to address clinical issues promptly.
  • Coordinates with Manager to implement quality improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in live symposiums both in procedure rooms and in off-site laboratory teaching settings, is preferred.
  • Assist endoscopists with drafting of manuscripts, particularly on ROSE and other related matters, is preferred.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an approved school of Cytotechnology. Bachelor’s degree in science or Cytotechnology
  • Current license as Cytotechnologist in the State of Florida – renewed biennial in August. Certified Cytotechnologist (ASCP) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists – renewed annually.
  • Passed research, ethics, and compliance training (CITI), is preferred.
  • Five (5) years of experience in an academic endoscopy unit with assessment of more than 2000 EUS-FNA samples.
  • Experience with ROSE assessment of cholangioscopy-guided biopsies.
  • Basic knowledge of statistics and statistical analysis.
  • Teaching experience in processing samples and assessing for ROSE in educational lab settings using teaching models.
  • Experience with telepathology technologies.
  • Experience with use of basic science Nikon software for tissue quantification in research, is preferred.
