A medical assistant supports both clinical and administrative operations within a medical practice setting, ensuring smooth operations in medical settings. The medical assistant assists doctors with patient acre, preparing patients for examinations and assisting with minor medical procedures.
Responsibilities
~1 min readBasic knowledge of ophthalmic and optometric exams, procedures, and terminology can be obtained via on-the-job training.
Basic knowledge and competency of the technical skills listed below are required for a medical assistant working in an ophthalmology/optometry setting. This knowledge may be obtained via on-the-job training during the first ninety (90) days of on boarding into this position.
- History Taking (including basic pharmacologic understanding of common ophthalmic & systemic medications)
- Visual acuity
- Confrontation Visual Fields
- Extraocular Muscle Assessment
- Pupil Assessment
- Intraocular Pressure Measurement with handheld, automatic tonometer
- Automated Lensometry
- Autorefractometry
- Angle Assessment with oblique illumination method
- Prepare patients for examination or treatment, taking an ocular and systemic history and accurately recording visual acuity
- Prep injections, medications, and sterile field for in-office procedures; assist doctor or surgeon with in-office and minor procedures
- Administer topical ophthalmic and oral systemic medications under the direction of the doctor.
- Assist with patient education.
- Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of exam rooms during the workday.
- Complies with all practice procedures and protocols. Complies with all State and Federal regulations.
- Report inventory and supply needs to leadership timely and as needed for supply ordering
- Participate in daily team huddles and regularly scheduled meetings as planned and required.
- Understand and accept responsibility to report potential or suspected errors to supervisor or Compliance Officer
- Contribute to the team effort by completing additional tasks or projects as needed.
- Maintain positive attitude consisting of cooperation, self-motivation, courtesy, and professionalism
Requirements

- CMA certification eligible; current certification preferred
- Prior experience with medical terminology, documentation, and ophthalmology or optometry preferred
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment.
