The Patient Account Representative, under the general supervision of the Patient Accounts Director, is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely billing, collections, and payment entries using the practice management system. Additionally, this role involves verifying patient insurance coverage, processing claims, and ensuring that charge entry is correctly code. The Patient Account Representative possess exceptional communication skills and the ability to effectively interact with patients, insurance providers, and healthcare professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Verifying insurance coverage and eligibility for medical services and obtaining pre-authorization for certain procedures as required.
  • Processing electronic and manual post charges, insurance, and patient payments accurately to the correct patient accounts.
  • Filing electronic and mail paper claims (UB and CMS1500) in a timely manner.
  • Actively investigating and appealing denied claims.
  • Communicating with insurance providers, healthcare professionals, and patients regarding medical claims, payments, and discrepancies through various communication channels such as mail, telephone, fax, or email.
  • Working with patients to set up payment plans and provide excellent customer service.
  • Reviewing outstanding accounts receivable balances and writing off uncollectible balances as appropriate.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • At least 2 years of previous office experience, preferably in a clinical setting.
  • At least 2 years of prior medical billing experience or certification in medical billing.
  • In-depth knowledge of insurance guidelines, including HMO/PPO, Medicare, Medicaid, and other payer requirements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel programs and ability to navigate in a Windows environment.
  • Excellent multitasking skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is preferable.
  • Demonstrate a high level of attention to detail and accuracy in their work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, insurance providers, and colleagues.
  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and able to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment to meet deadlines.

  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
