The NY Foundling’s Identity & Acceptance Program offers free therapeutic services through free individual, group and family therapy as well as psychiatric services if desired for LGBTQIA+ youth ages 0-21. These services are all offered with no copay, regardless of insurance or immigration status to ensure we can be accessible to all. Remote services are available but are offered dependent on the needs of each client. Our two main sites are based in Brooklyn (111 Livingston Street, Brooklyn NY 11201) and East Harlem (109 E. 115th Street, New York 10029). In addition to our mental health services, we offer free gender-affirming clothing, wellness supplies, and a multitude of events and workshops throughout the year for clients and the surrounding community to best meet their identified needs.

 

We are currently seeking a 2nd-year MSW intern for Fall 2024/Spring 2025.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive client intakes which include administering mental health screenings for anxiety, depression, ADHD and trauma (ie GAD7, PHQ9, CPSS-V, Vanderbilt Assessment, etc.)
  • Provide supportive counseling to a caseload of 1 to 3 LGBTQIA+ youth (and their birth/chosen and/or foster families depending on case needs).
  • This may include individual therapy, dyadic (parent and child), and collateral (parent-only) sessions.
  • Co-facilitate at least 1 youth and/or parent support groups
  • Develop and facilitate workshops & community events
  • Opportunities to attend community coalition meetings & community events on behalf of the agency/program
  • Conduct community outreach to recruit new families

*Specific student assignments will be determined in collaboration with the practicum instructor, task supervisor, and student. Assignments will be based on the student’s skill level, learning needs, interests, and the current program needs.

 

  • 1hr Individual weekly supervision with SIFI practicum instructor
  • 1hr Interdisciplinary Team Meeting with all clinical staff including psychiatry, Wednesday’s @11am (optional for students but strongly encouraged)
  • Opportunity to join weekly group supervision (optional)
  • Student will receive training in TF-CBT, Motivational Interviewing, suicide intervention, and interventions for working with non-affirming families of LGBTQIA+ youth.
  • Opportunity to attend monthly department-wide didactic learning series (topics vary)

Students would be working as part of an all LGBTQIA+-identified team, supporting the LGBTQIA+ community, and nestled within a larger community mental health clinic to gain additional insight from other clinicians outside of the program as well on a variety of cases.

Requirements

  • Strong interest, connection, and commitment to working with the LGBTQIA+ community.
  • Bilingual preferred, but not required (primary language needs: English, Spanish, ASL, French)
  • Desire to work with youth and families.
  • Creative approach to interventions.
  • Prior group facilitation or other clinical experience is a plus.
  • Understanding of trauma + intersectionality, and its impact on ones lived experience.
Bachelor’s Degree from a U.S. accredited educational institution or Credential Evaluation for a non-U.S. educational institution
