Cape Breton University (CBU) invites applications for the full time continuing, Student Rights and Supports Advisor position. The successful candidate will play a central role in supporting students through complex, sensitive, and often high-impact situations related to student rights, responsibilities, conduct, wellbeing, and conflict.   The role provides case management, education, guidance, and early-stage conflict resolution, with a strong emphasis on trauma-informed, student-centered, and procedurally fair approaches. This role acts as a neutral guide and support for students navigating university policies—whether as a complainant, respondent, or impacted party—while contributing to a respectful, inclusive, and safe campus environment.   This position is designed to be adaptive and evolving, responding to emerging student needs, policy changes, and institutional priorities   The nature of the work will require availability and ability to work evenings and occasional weekends.   Responsibilities include, but not limited to:    Provide confidential, trauma-informed support to students, including intake, assessment, and coordination of appropriate resources.  Facilitate conflict resolution and restorative processes while collaborating with campus partners to support student wellbeing. Deliver education and prevention initiatives that promote mental health, safety, respect, and inclusion across campus. Guide students through university policies and processes, ensuring clarity, fairness, and access to support. Maintain accurate, secure case documentation and uphold privacy and confidentiality standards. Identify trends and contribute to policy development and continuous improvement to enhance campus supports.   Qualifications and Skills:   Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Education, Nursing, Human Rights, or a related field. Master’s degree would be considered an asset. Minimum of 5 years’ experience in case management, advocacy, student support, or conflict resolution in a post-secondary or community setting. Required ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends. Demonstrated knowledge of trauma-informed practice, sexual violence response, and human rights principles. Demonstrated experience in the delivery and/or coordination of awareness-raising events, training, and information sessions. Completion of investigative training strongly preferred Strong interpersonal, listening, and de-escalation skills. Ability to navigate sensitive, high-stress situations with professionalism and empathy. Excellent judgement and ability to maintain neutrality and boundaries. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Exceptional record-keeping ability with strong attention to detail. Ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining accurate documentation. Comfort working within evolving mandates and institutional change. Self-starter who has the ability to work independently as part of a team Knowledge of current trends and issues in the fields of human rights and multicultural learning. Experience working with young people ideally in a university environment is desirable. Knowledge and experience with social media and other contemporary communications techniques.
