RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the Artistic Director and Senior Advisor – Performance Medicine, you will be directly responsible to:
Clinical:
- Ensure that all relevant medical care, prevention, rehabilitation, and health care administration is being delivered to the highest possible standard of care and confidentiality, while relevant to the functional demand of our artists and environment;
- Lead and ensure that the environment’s (show, training, PR events etc.) emergency response preparedness in relation to our artists is at the highest possible state of readiness and well documented with clear written Emergency Action Plans – this requires regular close interactions with members of the emergency support team, and routine practice of scenarios with each of those involved;
- Deliver emergency response care in a safe and professional manner;
- Achieve and maintain an appropriate CdS approved First aid and Trauma Management Certificate, to work as first responder and incident lead for training and in-show cover;
- Stimulate and foster close functional relationships with Coaches and other Artistic team members to establish and implement programs directed at the reduction of injury in an effort to achieve optimal performance, relevant to an artists’ specific needs;
- Make recommendations for psychological and nutritional referrals, when appropriate, for medical conditions;
- Ensure cost effective and timely referrals to appropriate medical providers for any relevant illness or injury;
- Collaborate with the Coaching Team to create moments of exchange for feedback and problem solving in regard to strength and conditioning, reintegration planning, and performance support;
- Establish and actively participate in regular Artist Performance planning meetings with Coaches and any other relevant team members;
- Ensure that all medical information, interactions and interventions are being documented and communicated as per medico-legal and CdS specific requirements including but not limited to C-fit and completion of necessary legal/insurance documents, while making sure artist-therapist confidentiality is being adhered to at all times;
- Ensure that Artists are accompanied to medical appointments whenever indicated;
- Actively participate in medical consultations where appropriate.
- Collaborate with artistic team, and attend appropriate meetings etc., to ensure clear communication regarding PMED recommendations for artist functional restrictions;
- Maintain a direct link with the show’s appropriate representative regarding insurance and worker's compensation needs; ensuring all necessary information, forms and reports are communicated and delivered in a timely and organized manner.
- Be the responsible specialist on medical matters for your show/environment and make clear decisions over suitability to participate in training or show based on these, considering and mitigating the risk to the artist and business of any recommended modifications. These recommendations should be made to the Coach and Artistic Director who will conclude any modification strategy.
- Create and implement appropriate Injury Risk Reduction strategies;
Managerial:
- Ensuring that all arrangements and agreements made between Cirque du Soleil and other medical authorities and institutions are being respected in an ethical and professional manner;
- Perform all relevant tasks inherent to the position of PMED Therapist in a professional, ethical manner and at the highest possible standard of care, in alignment with your professional licensure or CdS Standard, whichever is higher;
- Ensuring that all the department's daily operational needs are being met at the highest possible standard of professionalism, care and ethics, including: scheduling of staff, show emergency cover, managing the impact of injury and illness information on performance, undertaking injury risk reduction strategies based on show-specific KPIs, managing medical contractors (e.g. massage therapy), maintenance of supplies all while ensuring the workspace is properly and professionally organized and maintained at all times;
- Adhering to the direction of and timely communication with the show’s Artistic Team and PMED Senior Advisor;
- Lead communication with the Artistic Team regarding injury timelines to allow show to determine necessity for temporary replacements; provide recommendations for external care when appropriate and liaise with artist repatriation;
- Adhering to optimal safety guidelines and processes within the artists’ working and performance environment;
- Fostering interdependent relationships with the members of the Artistic Team while being responsible for the active and professional contribution of the PMed department to functional decision making processes (Human Performance Risk Management);
- Work within the constraints of, established relevant PMED budgets and ordering for supplies in relation to the PMED Department's needs;
- Fostering a positive, stimulating and ethical working environment for the PMed Department staff while being responsible for the guidance and supervision of their functioning and professional growth and development;
- Promptly conveying all pertinent information to the PMED Senior Advisor while actively participating in periodic meetings and reporting;
- Collaborate with the PMED Senior Advisor to identify show specific injury trends for potential analysis and solutions;
- Implement targeted injury prevention approaches based on injury trends within your show, and deliver these projects;
General:
- Adhere to the direction of, and timely communication with, the PMED Senior Advisor; this also includes the operations management team;
- Adhere to, promote and contribute to optimal safety guidelines and processes within the artists’ working and performance environment;
- Create and foster interdependent relationships with the members of the artistic and coaching teams while being responsible for the active and professional contribution of the PMED department to functional decision-making processes (Human Performance Risk Management);
- Foster a positive, stimulating and ethical working environment for the PMED Department
- Promptly convey all pertinent medical information to the management team and the Senior Head Therapist while actively participating in periodic meetings and reporting;
- Comply with all CdS Performance Medicine governance standards, Performance Medicine Standards of Professional Practice (SoPP) and audit requirements;
- Actively participate in continuing professional development opportunities, to remain an expert and leader in Medical, Therapy and team approaches;
REQUIREMENTS
- University degree in Athletic Training or Physical Therapy along with an appropriately maintained and recognised professional registration in the State of Hawaii;
- Minimum 8 years' relevant clinical musculoskeletal experience;
- Must be able to achieve and maintain a current valid First Aid and Trauma Management certificate issued by a CdS recognised body;
- Fluent in English, both written and spoken;
- Significant experience working with high-caliber athletes or artists delivering treatment and rehabilitation programmes;
- Experience of working with Performing artists/Performance athletes and coaches in a professional environment
- Able to work in a culturally diverse environment;
- Able to quickly adapt to unexpected situations and work flexibly with a variable schedule whilst under pressure;
- Able to work at height or in confined spaces, including as Lead of Emergency Response Team;
- Able to liaise with medical professionals to the best outcome for artists;
- A pro-active, problem-solving attitude, with the ability to work well in a team
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the job including, but not limited to: crouching, kneeling, standing, lifting, sometimes for extended amounts of time; lifting at least 50lbs unassisted, etc.; Full list of essential functions will be sent in the offer. COMPENSATION
- The salary range for this position is $85,000 – $95,000 USD/year.
- This range is location-specific and compensation in other geographies may vary. Actual compensation within the pay range will be decided upon elements related, but not limited to: skills, prior relevant experience, and specific work location.
