Job Description:
Under general supervision, provides assistance with planning, developing, and implementing recreation activities, including but not limited to aquatics programming, athletics programming, special events, classes, camps, and social media, along with management of the cemetery records and deeds. Embraces and upholds the mission and values of the Parks and Recreation Department. Assists in identifying present and future needs, goals and objectives for programs, services, and facilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assists and works with the Recreation Superintendent in the planning, organizing, coordination, implementation, and promotion of special events, recreational programs, and aquatics as assigned.
- Evaluates special events and recreation programs.
- Under the general direction of the Recreation Superintendent, trains and coordinates volunteers for assigned special events.
- Maintains adequate inventory and upkeep of special events and recreational equipment and materials.
- Responsible for oversight for special events, recreational programs, and social media as assigned.
- Engaged with outside government entities such as Texas Recreation and Park Society (TRAPS), National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), and/or Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF)
- Creating and designing graphics.
- Assist with social media; creating & posting content, responding to comments, & engaging with community.
- Schedule the use of City Park facilities with individuals/organizations and collect fees and record transactions; makes deposits for the department and maintains deposit records.
- Enrolls individuals in recreational programs and activities, collects fees, and records transactions.
- Maintains cemetery records, issues deeds, prepares deposits, assists with lot sales, and permits.
- Overlooks and enforces city ordinance fees and city guidelines pertaining to the cemetery.
- Maintains and updates city website.
- Coordinates tournament contracts for all city park facilities.
- Assists with arrangements for rental of city facilities; coordinates room assignments and maintains booking calendar for individuals and groups.
- Manages work orders for the department; files and maintains permanent departmental records.
- Serves as essential emergency personnel when required.
- Regular and prompt attendance is an essential function of the position.
- Performs such other duties as may be assigned.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Recreation Administration, or related field preferred. High School Degree or its equivalent, supplemented by college-level course work in recreation, education, or physical education. One to three years of experience in developing and implementing recreation and athletic programs preferred. Some experience in supervising recreational activities or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Knowledge of: philosophy & objectives of public recreation; of principles of supervision, organization & administration; and of current literature, trends & developments in the field of park & recreation development.
- Skill/Ability to: read & understand technical materials, reports, & journals as well as city policies, procedures & budget documents. Plan, direct & coordinate the work of recreation department employees. Operate various computer software programs, strong written & verbal communication skills, organizational skills & attention to detail.
- Safety/Physical Requirements: ability to lift/carry 50 lbs. of material; bending, stooping, and reaching as needed, sitting stationary for extended periods of time, and working outside in a variety of environments.
- Certifications & Licenses Required: Must be bondable and possess a valid Class C Texas Driver’s license. Certified Pool Operator (CPO) preferred but not required.
