What You'll Do

As a Relief Person – Grounds with the City of Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department, you'll help maintain the beauty, safety, and functionality of our parks, athletic fields, and public spaces. From mowing and turf care to snow removal and facility upkeep, you'll play a key role in keeping community spaces clean, welcoming, and ready for year-round use.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain park grounds including mowing, turf repair, tree trimming/removal, stump grinding, erosion repair, and snow removal
  • Prepare and maintain athletic fields and ball diamonds, including infield dragging and turf care
  • Clean restrooms and facilities; remove litter, debris, graffiti, and refuse
  • Operate and maintain equipment such as riding mowers, tractors, dump trucks, refuse packer trucks, and snow removal equipment
  • Complete work reports accurately and maintain positive public interactions with park patrons

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Direct the work of up to six employees during assigned shifts or peak seasons

What You Bring | Education & Experience

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Minimum one year of experience in municipal park maintenance or related grounds maintenance work
  • Experience operating turf and grounds equipment
  • Knowledge of athletic field and ball diamond maintenance
  • Valid Indiana Driver's License with For-Hire endorsement

Technical Skills & Knowledge

  • Ability to safely operate power tools and maintenance equipment (chainsaws, string trimmers, snow blowers, etc.)
  • General knowledge of turf care, janitorial products, and grounds maintenance practices
  • Ability to read safety rules, follow written and verbal instructions, and complete routine reports
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and perform physical outdoor work year-round
