ENGINEERING IN TRAINING (EIT)
The City of Hamilton’s Engineer-In-Training (EIT) program is centered on engaging civil engineering graduates in a dynamic 4-year work contract that includes a fixed term where the EIT will spend 2 years with the Engineering Services Division in the Public Works Department and 2 years with the Growth Management Division in the Planning & Economic Development Department. Throughout the program, the EIT will receive comprehensive training in municipal engineering best practices, theories, and processes pertaining to municipal infrastructure. This will provide the EIT with valuable insights and hands-on experience as they contribute to project work and progress towards attaining their professional designation, as validated by City of Hamilton professional staff. Additionally, the EIT will have the opportunity to participate in various corporate initiatives assigned by the team, further enhancing their overall professional development.
Over the course of the 4-year contract, the EIT will collaborate closely in a results-oriented team environment working directly on engineering projects with a goal to both attain the necessary work experience and credentials to acquire a Professional Engineer’s of Ontario license and forge a career with the municipality in the field of engineering.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES
Reporting to the Manager, the EIT will work in a team environment with staff engaged in infrastructure project delivery over the course of a 4-year work contract. The EIT will perform duties with the Infrastructure Renewal, Design, and Construction sections in Public Works for 2 years and perform duties with the Infrastructure Planning, Development Engineering, and Development Construction sections in Planning & Economic Development Department for 2 years.
The EIT will engage in the technical work associated with coordinating the planning, design and construction of municipal infrastructure which will contribute to work experience required to attain a professional engineering license.
Duties include project work related to planning studies; infrastructure programming; engineering design; approvals and permitting; and construction, including inspection and administration.
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
In the Engineering Services Division, the EIT will spend time in various roles in the Infrastructure Renewal, Design, and Construction sections.
In Growth Management Division the EIT will spend time in various roles in the Infrastructure Planning, Development Engineering, and Development Construction sections.
The EIT will assume responsibility of a junior engineer assigned specific tasks and assignments relating to the planning, design and construction of municipal infrastructure projects and assist to ensure that engineering projects are delivered in accordance with City and Provincial standards and in the most effective and efficient manner consistent with the City of Hamilton Mission and Vision.
Under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer, the EIT will:
- assist with infrastructure planning studies, review of development applications and servicing plans, and construction and inspection of growth-related infrastructure;
- assist with design of municipal servicing projects including watermain, sewers, and roads;
- conduct field work, site inspections, and contract administration;
- conduct research and technical investigations and studies, preparing technical reports and making related recommendations;
- assist with preparation of tender documents in compliance with City, Provincial and Federal guidelines including the obtaining of any project approvals or permits required to tender projects in a timely manner.
- engage in project management duties including working with consultants, recommending and implementing standards for work performed by consultants on Engineering and Growth Management projects;
- assist with preparation of engineering manuals, standard operating procedures, work processes, regulatory and performance reports;
- assist with the preparation of various documents, including Terms of Reference, staff reports, purchase requisitions, and similar
- attend public meetings and similar public engagement functions related to the division’s service delivery model.
The EIT will perform other duties as assigned which are directly related to the responsibilities of the position.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A bachelor’s degree in a civil engineering program from McMaster University, A graduate who is within 6-12 months of graduation and with high academic standing.
- Previous engineering work experience is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of engineering and project management theories, practices and trends in managing contracts and projects, including reviewing, recommending and implementing work plans and project
- Experience using a variety of software products such as Microsoft Office Suite, ArcGIS and other related data software.
- Knowledge of design and drafting software (e.g., MicroStation, Bluebeam, AutoCAD).
- Possession of a valid Province of Ontario Driver's License Class "G" and the ability to travel to various work locations and construction sites in a timely manner.

- Academic/working knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Environmental Protection Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act, etc.
SALARY:
Salary Grade 4
HOURS: 35 per week
