Responsibilities
~1 min readThe Safety Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and advancing BAMSI’s agency-wide safety program, reducing operational risk, and promoting a culture of safety across all program and service locations.
• Coordinate and maintain an agency-wide safety management program aligned with regulatory requirements and best practices
• Develop and implement safety initiatives that improve employee, participant, and public safety
• Monitor safety performance and recommend improvements to policies, procedures, and systems
• Promote a culture of reporting, accountability, and continuous improvement
• Conduct scheduled and unscheduled safety inspections across homes, offices, vehicles, and program sites
• Identify hazards, document findings, assign corrective actions, and verify resolution
• Develop and maintain safety inspection tools and checklists covering:
- Fire and life safety
- Environmental hazards
- Slip, trip, and fall prevention
- Personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Infection control
- Emergency preparedness
- Transportation and vehicle safety
• Maintain a centralized corrective-action tracking system and escalate unresolved risks when necessary
• Participate in reviews of employee injuries, motor vehicle incidents, person-served safety events, and near misses
• Conduct root cause analyses and identify preventive actions
• Collaborate with Quality Improvement, Human Resources, Operations, and leadership teams to reduce recurring risks
• Monitor safety trends and develop proactive prevention strategies
• Coordinate BAMSI’s transportation and fleet safety program
• Monitor driver qualification processes, vehicle inspections, and transportation safety practices
• Conduct transportation audits and ride-alongs as appropriate
• Support training and competency evaluations related to:
- Safe driving
- Passenger transport
- Wheelchair and occupant securement
- Vehicle safety procedures
• Recommend removal from service of unsafe vehicles, equipment, or work environments when necessary
• Partner with Learning & Development to maintain agency-wide safety training compliance
• Coordinate orientation, refresher trainings, toolbox talks, and practical safety demonstrations
• Develop and support a network of Safety Officers and Safety Champions throughout BAMSI programs
• Provide coaching and safety guidance to employees and leaders
• Coordinate emergency preparedness activities, including drills, tabletop exercises, and readiness planning
• Support evacuation procedures, fire drills, severe weather planning, and emergency response efforts
• Assist with after-action reviews and implementation of corrective actions following emergency events
• Collaborate with insurance carriers, consultants, regulatory agencies, and organizational leaders on safety and risk-management initiatives
• Support compliance with OSHA, transportation regulations, licensing requirements, and human service safety standards
• Prepare safety dashboards, reports, and presentations for leadership that track:
- Injury trends
- Training compliance
- Corrective-action completion
- Vehicle incidents
- Audit results
- Near-miss reporting
- Safety performance indicators
• Participate in and coordinate the BAMSI Safety Management Committee
• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Safety, Risk Management, Healthcare Administration, Human Services Administration, or a related field preferred
• Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered
• Minimum three (3) years of experience in occupational safety, risk management, facilities safety, healthcare, transportation safety, human services, or a related field required
• Experience in multi-site human services, healthcare, behavioral health, developmental disability, or residential service environments strongly preferred
• Knowledge of OSHA General Industry standards and safety management principles
• Understanding of Massachusetts transportation, fire/life safety, and human services regulatory requirements
• Experience conducting:
- Safety inspections
- Risk assessments
- Incident investigations
- Root cause analyses
- Corrective action follow-up
- Safety trend analysis
• Strong training, coaching, and relationship-building skills
• Ability to influence and engage employees and leaders across all organizational levels
• Excellent written, verbal, organizational, and presentation skills
• Strong data analysis and reporting capabilities
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and reporting systems
Nice to Have
~1 min read• OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months)
• First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor Certification preferred
• Fleet Safety, Defensive Driving, Passenger Assistance, or Occupant Securement Training preferred
• ASP, ARM, CHSP, CSP, or other professional safety/risk management certifications preferred
Requirements
~1 min read• Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record required
• Ability to travel regularly throughout Massachusetts
• Ability to respond on-site to urgent safety concerns when necessary
• Ability to conduct facility and vehicle inspections, including walking, standing, stair climbing, bending, and entering/exiting vehicles
