This position is a member of the Public Works Department which includes the Streets, Water, and Wastewater Divisions. In this role, you will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant, ensuring that the facility runs efficiently and in compliance with all local, state, and federal environmental regulations. The ideal candidate will have strong technical skills, a keen attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Successful candidates must establish residency within a 20-mile aerial radius of Collinsville City Hall, within twelve (12) months of hire date. This is a union position with the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 520C.

Responsibilities

All operations pertaining to the wastewater treatment process at the plant. Duties vary depending upon which shift the operator is working and if it is a regular day or weekend shift:

  • Operate and monitor wastewater treatment processes and equipment, including pumps, motors, clarifiers, aerators, and chemical feeders, to ensure efficient treatment of wastewater.
  • Conduct regular inspections of equipment and systems to identify any issues or malfunctions and take corrective action as needed.
  • Adjust and control the flow of wastewater through various stages of the treatment process to maintain optimal operational performance.
  • Perform routine maintenance on plant equipment and machinery, including cleaning, lubricating, and replacing parts as necessary.
  • Collect samples of wastewater at various stages of treatment for laboratory analysis and assist with interpreting test results to determine the effectiveness of the treatment process.
  • Record operational data, including flow rates, chemical usage, and equipment performance, in logbooks or computerized systems.
  • Participate in on-call rotations as required for after-hours plant operations.
  • Assist with training new operators and other staff members on plant procedures and safety practices.
  • Follow and contribute to the continuous improvement of plant operational procedures and safety measures.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve minor equipment or process problems and escalate more complex issues to supervisors or maintenance staff.
  • Respond to emergencies and plant alarms, including potential chemical spills, equipment malfunctions, and process upsets, following standard operating procedures.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent is preferred, and the following experience and/or education/training is preferred:

  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in a wastewater treatment or similar industrial environment is preferred.
  • Knowledge of wastewater treatment processes, equipment, and systems.
  • Ability to operate and maintain machinery such as pumps, motors, and valves.
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations and safety standards related to wastewater treatment.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Basic computer skills, including familiarity with SCADA systems and data entry.
  • Licenses and Certifications:
    • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
    • A Class 4 wastewater certification or the ability to obtain it within 1 year.

Walking, standing, sitting, stooping, and lifting various material and equipment over 50 lbs. is required daily. Must be able to reach, grasp, bend, and work with power and hand tools while in a bent over position and overhead. Infrequently (i.e., during semiannual plant cleanup), the use of air hammers and chippers to remove heavy calcium carbonate buildup and crawling on the stomach through dark and wet pipes and passages may also be required. The ability to enter and work in confined spaces while wearing Self Contained Breathing Apparatus is required.

Candidate must have basic knowledge of algebra, environmental science, and water chemistry. Knowledge of mechanics, electricity, process control, instrumentation is preferred. The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of OSHA rules and standards.

Must be able to report for work on time and to perform the duties of the job for the entire workday. Must be able to work flexible hours with some weekend, evening, and holiday work required. Must be able to perform frequent overtime work which may involve late night or early morning hours.

Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the pay range begins at $32.65/hour.
