Software Engineer II

General Summary:

The Python Engineer II builds and maintains backend and system-level features. This role focuses on production Python software, Linux system management, MySQL integration, REST APIs, and virtualization workflows. The engineer is responsible for developing high-quality, innovative, fully performing software in compliance with coding standards. This individual works in partnership with cross-functional teams to ensure that software deliverables, including designs, codes, and tests, are completed in a timely manner while remaining aligned with industry and organizational standards.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• Provides support to the Engineering team, with a high attention to detail
• Designs, builds, and maintains Python services and APIs
• Works on systems critical to the organization's current and future operations
• Debugs production issues across services and multiple levels of the stack
• Assists with improvement of organizational engineering standards, tooling, and processes
• Participates in the testing process through test review and analysis, test witnessing, and certification of software
• Evaluates codes to ensure validity, proper structure, alignment with industry standards, and compatibility with operating systems
• Maintains an understanding of current and new technologies or programming practices through continuing education, reading, and participation in professional conferences, workshops, or groups

Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities Required:

• 2+ years of practical experience building and supporting production software with Python
• Strong Python fundamentals, including object-oriented programming, error handling, testing, debugging, and package management
• Strong Linux fundamentals and confidence working from the command line
• Practical database experience, including schema inspection, joins, transactions, indexes and SQL troubleshooting
• Experience with Git, code reviews, automated tests, and CI/CD workflows
• Proven experience working in a Scrum or Agile software team
• Ability to work independently on projects and processes with close supervision
• Knowledge of a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures
• Ability to work constructively and independently under stress and pressure in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment
• Ability to interact positively and openly with colleagues and external business contacts, with strong verbal and written communication skills
• Understanding of relevant software development tools including version control, build processes, debuggers, and test frameworks

Nice to have:

• Experience with AWS infrastructure or cloud services
• Experience with MongoDB
• Experience with Grafana or similar monitoring and observability tools
• Understanding of networking concepts, including TCP/IP, DNS, routing, firewalls, VPNs, and port forwarding
• Experience with virtualization technologies or APIs, such as KVM, QEMU, libvirt, VMware, or Hyper-V
• Understanding of virtual machine lifecycle, virtual disks, snapshots, recovery points, and virtual networking
• Experience with backup, disaster recovery, or business continuity products

Educational/Vocational/Previous Experience Recommendations:

• Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent work experience
• 2+ years of production Python software engineering experience
• Direct experience with Python, Linux, and REST APIs is required

Working Conditions:

• Hybrid/Remote/On-site depending on location
• 0-10% travel may be required
