Duties: Operates equipment such as: pickup truck, dump truck, stake body or flatbed truck, front-end loaders, backhoe, track hoes, tractors, asphalt paving machine, rollers, lowboy trailers, oil distributors, and various excavators with experienced proficiency. Loads and unloads equipment on trailers and lowboys, transports to and from job sites. Ensures security of equipment on trailers with proper chains and binders with experienced proficiency. Works in using equipment to excavate and repair of streets, sidewalks, driveways, etc. and also digging ditches, setting culverts, and asphalt paving streets, etc. Sets safety cones and/or temporary signs around work site, and directs vehicular traffic around and through work sites with hand held flags to provide a safe working environment and citizen safety in the work site vicinity. May performs manual labor as a Utility Worker as needed. May establish work assignments and priorities for employees on assigned projects. May train staff in work methods to ensure conformance with standards, work objectives, results desired, and departmental goals and objectives. Inspects and checks vehicle and equipment for fuel, fluids and safety before use in order to ensure safe operating conditions. Maintains equipment in proper operating condition by performing simple preventive maintenance tasks (makes simple adjustments, replaces minor parts, lubricates, and cleans equipment). Detects needed repairs in order to promote accident prevention. Observes, evaluates, and recommends corrections regarding safety procedures in response to employee complaints and accident incidents. Communicates any unsafe conditions or accident/injuries in a timely manner to supervisor in order to facilitate prompt correction or reporting. Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service. Must have and maintain, without interruption, all necessary licenses, certifications, clearances, and/or job requirements. Works the assigned schedule and complies with the City's timekeeping and attendance policy.

Qualifications: High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Log a minimum of 240 operating hours on equipment and have a minimum of two (2) years of experience in the operation of equipment heavier than ordinary passenger vehicles. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted. Must demonstrate satisfactory proficiency of assigned equipment. Must demonstrate efficient leadership skills, ability to exercise safe and sound independent judgment and problem-solving skills. Must demonstrate broad knowledge of equipment and work processes. Must demonstrate experienced resource management, including people, time and materials. Must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possesses a valid driver's license necessary to operate and haul the assigned equipment and have an acceptable driving record. Employees in CDL positions will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment. Class B CDL to drive and operate heavy equipment. PREFFERED: Completed a training course in equipment operation from a recognized agency, such as TML or A&M Extension. Traffic Control I (Flagging) certificate. Utility Safety and Trenching and Shoring safety certifications. Class A CDL to drive and operate heavy equipment.

    • From 6 to less than 11 years of service - three weeks of vacation per year.
    • From 11 to less than 21 years of service – four weeks of vacation per year.
    • From 21 to less than 26 years of service – five weeks of vacation per year.
    • From 26 years of service and up – six weeks of vacation per year.
