Role Overview  

As a Staff Machine Learning Engineer on the TW Engineering team, you will drive the technical vision and architecture for understanding billions of e-commerce items. You will build the core machine learning foundation that transforms raw item data into structured intelligence, serving as a critical bridge between upstream product onboarding and downstream growth marketing, discovery engines (Search & Recommendation) for Taiwan consumers.

In this role, you will lead the end-to-end design of complex Catalog, Retail, Marketplace and Growth Marketing ML systems from scratch, tackle extreme scale, and leverage both Coupang’s proprietary Foundation Models and state-of-the-art (SOTA) LLMs/Multimodal models. You will partner closely with product, business, and cross-functional engineering teams, setting the standard for technical excellence and mentoring engineers along the way.

What You Will Do  

• 1. Technical Vision & System Architecture: Lead the architecture and end-to-end execution of large-scale systems understanding from scratch (0-to-1), transforming unstructured text and visual item data into high-precision product knowledge and representations.
  2. LLM & Foundation Model Innovation: Harness, fine-tune, and deploy Coupang’s proprietary Foundation Models alongside SOTA LLMs/VLMs. Establish robust data governance pipelines, domain-specific adaptation strategies, and rigorous benchmark evaluation frameworks for production workloads.
  3. End-to-End Stakeholder & Cross-Domain Enablement: Partner closely with upstream Product Selection & Onboarding teams (to improve item data quality at the source) and downstream Growth Marketing, Search & Recommendation teams (to boost retrieval and ranking relevance).
  4. Scale & Engineering Excellence: Solve latency, throughput, and scalability challenges inherent in processing billions of catalog items, ensuring highly reliable, low-latency online serving and offline batch processing.
  5. AI-Powered Workflow Acceleration: Drive team efficiency by adopting state-of-the-art AI tools for rapid ML prototyping, automated data profiling, and intuitive visual storytelling to demonstrate impact to business partners.
  6. Technical Leadership & Mentorship: Raise the technical bar across the organization through technical design reviews, MLOps best practices, and active mentorship of junior and senior engineers.

  
  
  

Basic Qualifications  

• 1. Solid understanding and rich experience in deep learning/traditional machine learning. Hands-on experience in Machine Learning and Deep Learning, with a proven track record of designing, building, and deploying production ML systems from scratch (0-to-1) at scale.
  2. Deep expertise in prompt engineering, domain-specific adaptation, PEFT, and fine-tuning of Large Language Models (LLMs) and Multimodal models (using both SOTA open/closed models and proprietary baselines), backed by strong data governance and evaluation methodologies.
  3. Demonstrated proficiency in leveraging modern AI tools (e.g., AI coding assistants, LLM-powered data analytics, and automated visualization tools) to accelerate ML modeling workflows, deep-dive data analysis, and technical result visualization.
  4. Exceptional communication skills with a proven ability to align with cross-functional stakeholders (product, business, leadership), articulate complex technical concepts clearly, and convincingly demonstrate business impact.
  5. Strong computer science fundamentals and system design capability. Highly proficient in production-grade code development (Python, Java, C++, or Go) and distributed computing frameworks (e.g., Spark, Ray, PyTorch distributed).

   

Preferred Qualifications  

• Deep experience in Catalog, Retail or Growth Marketing Domain Understanding (attribute extraction, taxonomy classification, entity resolution) and Image/Multimodal Perception (e.g., visual attribute extraction, image-text alignment, OCR, content-based product representation).
• Practical experience in building end-to-end MLOps pipelines (automated dataset management, continuous training, dynamic evaluation, and model monitoring).
• Prior experience serving as a Tech Lead / Staff Engineer mentoring cross-functional teams and defining long-term engineering roadmaps.
