The Senior Machinist is responsible for independently setting up, operating, and troubleshooting CNC milling and related machining equipment to produce precision parts that meet engineering specifications and production requirements. This role also supports manufacturing and engineering by creating and maintaining internal shop drawings using SolidWorks, and by quoting new machining jobs through evaluation of prints, materials, tooling, and estimated labor. The Senior Machinist serves as a technical expert on the shop floor and provides guidance to junior machinists.
Responsibilities
~2 min read- →Set up, operate, and troubleshoot CNC milling machines and related equipment to manufacture precision components.
- →Interpret complex engineering drawings, blueprints, GD&T, routings, and work instructions.
- →Create, modify, and maintain internal shop drawings using SolidWorks to support machining, setups, fixtures, and manufacturing processes.
- →Translate engineering designs into clear, practical shop‑level documentation to improve consistency, quality, and efficiency.
- →Select appropriate tooling, fixtures, and machining strategies to meet tolerance, quality, and cycle‑time requirements.
- →Perform routine in‑process dimensional checks using precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, etc.) to ensure ongoing conformance during production.
- →Troubleshoot machining, tooling, and process issues; implement corrective actions and recommend improvements.
- →Prepare quotes for new machining jobs by reviewing customer or engineering drawings and estimating labor hours, machine time, materials, tooling, and process complexity.
- →Collaborate with Engineering, Quality, and Production teams to support NPI, prototypes, and design‑for‑manufacturability (DFM) efforts.
- →Mentor and train junior machinists and operators on CNC milling setups, machining techniques, drawing interpretation, and best practices.
- →Ensure compliance with safety requirements, 5S standards, and company procedures.
- →Maintain accurate documentation, including setup sheets, work instructions, and revision‑controlled shop drawings.
- →Support continuous improvement initiatives related to scrap reduction, process capability, and production efficiency.
- →Assist with machine maintenance and recommend tooling, fixture, or process enhancements.
Requirements
~1 min read- High school diploma or GED required; technical or trade school training preferred.
- 7+ years of machining experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Strong experience with CNC milling operations.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks for creating and updating internal shop or manufacturing drawings.
- Demonstrated ability to estimate machining time and cost for quoting purposes.
- Strong ability to read and interpret complex blueprints and GD&T.
- Proven capability to independently complete CNC mill setups and machining operations.
- Solid understanding of machining principles, materials, feeds, speeds, and tolerances.
- Experience using precision measuring tools for in‑process verification.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and manage multiple priorities
Requirements

- Experience supporting New Product Introduction (NPI) or prototype builds.
- Experience developing fixtures, tooling concepts, or manufacturing aids for milling operations.
- Lean manufacturing or continuous improvement experience.

- Advanced problem‑solving and troubleshooting skills
- Ability to translate engineering intent into practical shop solutions
- Effective communication across Engineering, Quality, and Production
- Time management and ability to meet production schedules
- Commitment to safety and operational excellence
Requirements
