Under the general supervision of the Director, Facilities Management and Supervising Carpenter performs a wide variety of skilled work in the maintenance, alteration, and repair or mechanical systems and buildings. Technical supervision is rarely available.


Responsibilities

  • Performs shop work such as building furniture-type cabinets, credenzas, bookcases, display cases, tables, formica, or laminate work, picture and map frames, shelves, various types of mail and storage boxes, working from and interpreting blueprints, making rough sketches and recommendations for metal and wall construction. Recognizes and selects appropriate lumber types and grades. Installs, repairs, replaces, and removes doors, windows, window frames, door frames of either wood or metal [ Make forms for asphalt and concrete. Installation or minor repair of Venetian blinds, whiteboards, and roof repairs. Constructs wood and metal-type demountable walls and partitions with wood or gypsum panels and grid type drop ceilings. Acts as Supervising Carpenter in the absence of Supervising Carpenter.
  • Perform a wide variety of skilled maintenance work and construction related tasks in the maintenance and repair of the building systems within facilities, building construction and repair work. Ensures that tools, equipment, and material on hand are appropriate and available to perform the job, efficiently and economically.  Make reports to supervisor on completed work.  Maintains cleanliness of shop premises and on all working projects in or around university structures. Assists in the maintenance of all Carpenter Shop equipment, performs inspection and repair on scheduled preventive maintenance program on university structures and grounds as necessary.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $5,355 (Step 1) - $7,801 (Step 20) per month.
Paid Time Off: Up to 24 vacation days per year (based on employee group and/or length of service), 14 paid holidays, and 12 sick days annually with unlimited accrual.

The ideal candidate possesses thorough knowledge of the materials, methods, and tools used in the repair of mechanical equipment, building maintenance, and construction-related work, with demonstrated skill in performing these duties safely and effectively. They are proficient in the use and maintenance of machinery, hand tools, and power tools associated with maintenance and carpentry, and have the ability to build, install, and repair structural woodwork, flooring, ceilings, and cabinetry while consistently delivering high-quality customer service. The candidate maintains a strong working knowledge of applicable safety regulations, including Industrial Accident Commission safety orders related to heating, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems. They can read, interpret, and work from plans, drawings, specifications, and written instructions, and possess strong oral and written communication skills. Additionally, they are capable of estimating labor and material requirements, maintaining accurate records through manual and computerized systems, and retrieving work-related data as needed. The ideal candidate demonstrates the ability to work independently and as part of a team, follow procedural directions, instruct and support unskilled and semi-skilled assistants, and lead and coordinate small crews of skilled trades workers.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.  Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.  Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."


• Equivalent to a high school diploma and journey-level carpenter skills similar to that acquired through the completion of a carpenter’s apprenticeship program required.


• Valid California driver's license required.

Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and/or use their personal vehicle more than once a month on university business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.
