Community Service Specialists are uniformed, non-sworn employees who provide a variety of public relations, technical, clerical, security and enforcement-related functions. Under the general supervision of the Parking & Transportation Manager and/or a Lieutenant, and under the lead of a Community Service Specialist II, the incumbent will support the mission of the University, the Fresno State Police Department and the Traffic Operations division.

Typical work assignments may fall within one or more of the following areas:

• Security Services: Patrolling campus on foot, bike, or vehicle to protect the campus community from such hazards as fire, theft, vandalism, trespassing and other crimes; checking, opening and securing campus facilities; and coordinating and testing campus alarm systems.
• Parking Support: Ensuring parking compliance through issuing and selling parking permits, patrolling parking lots, and issuing citations for parking and other standing violations, directing vehicle and pedestrian traffic during peak hours, special events and emergencies, assisting with processing revenues related to the Parking and Transportation programs, assisting with alternative transportation programs.
• Campus Community Support: Assisting with the physical logistics of campus special events and emergencies; providing general information, customer service, and assistance to the public; performing all customer service duties at the Parking Customer Service Office as directed; providing escort and citizen assistance; and providing transportation for persons with disabilities.

 

  • Working knowledge of applicable university policies and procedures, methods, practices, and terminology used in public safety communications and ability to learn to use applicable public safety related equipment and systems.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to:
    • Work day, night, weekend, and holiday shifts on a rotational basis.
    • Detect and respond appropriately to potential hazardous or crime situations.
    • Observe and recall details and incidents.
    • Act and resolve parking and traffic problems.
    • Write standard incident reports in a clear and concise manner.
    • Handle sensitive situations with tact and responsibility.
    • Perform simple arithmetic computations.
    • Read and write at an appropriate level.
    • Establish priorities and determine deadlines.
    • Learn and understand policies and procedures.
    • Understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
    • Assist students, staff, faculty, and the general public by providing information as requested.
    • Work independently under general supervision.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, students and staff from diverse ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
    • Learn and effectively use various police department communication platforms.
  • One year of experience performing parking and/or traffic control like functions.
  • Knowledge of computer office systems and ability to use a broad range of technology, systems, and software packages (Microsoft Office Suite, Google apps.
  • Proficient in use of two-way radio communication.

 

Responsibilities

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three to six months of directly related work experience performing similar duties as outlined in the general assignment.
  • Possession of a valid class “C” California Driver’s License and a demonstrated good driving record. (Any job offers made will be contingent upon proof of good driving records as determined by a check for violations recorded with the Department of Motor Vehicles. As a condition of continued employment, incumbents selected must successfully complete Defensive Driving Courses as prescribed by University regulations related to driving any vehicle on state business.)
  • A work history of regular attendance and positive performance evaluations.
