PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for administrative and clinical supervision of professional nurses, paraprofessionals and other staff involving direct nursing care of individuals or performing specialized professional nursing work in the areas of community or therapeutic nursing. At the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities or Connecticut Technical Education and Career System this class is accountable for providing primary nursing care for students and facility staff.\r\n

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

WORKING LEAD:\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n Leads the planning of care and implementation of the nursing process;\r\n Plans unit workflow and determines priorities;\r\n Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews work;\r\n Makes recommendations for personnel actions such as selection, discipline and performance;�\r\n Conducts or assist in conducting performance evaluations;\r\n Leads professional and paraprofessional nursing staff in provision of patient/individual care;\r\n Maintains and promotes standards of nursing;\r\n Ensures controlled drugs are properly stored, administered and ordered;\r\n Identifies staff development needs;\r\n Provides staff training and assistance;\r\n Instructs staff regarding policies and procedures;\r\n Participates in interdisciplinary meetings to promote and ensure adjustment and continuity of patient/individual care programs;\r\n Responds to emergencies;\r\n May make recommendations on policies and standards;\r\n May prepare reports or correspondence;\r\n May serve as Qualified Intellectual Disability Professional (QIDP);\r\n Performs related duties as required.\r\n\r\n\r\nDIRECT CARE:\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n Independently develops, implements and evaluates nursing and/or health care plans;�\r\n Provides nursing consultation in the assigned specialty program;\r\n Conducts nursing assessments;�\r\n Provides admission and discharge nursing assessments including plans for continuing care;\r\n Maintains records and makes reports;�\r\n Provides for nursing services to comply with intermediate care facility (ICF) regulations and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) standards;\r\n Maintains records of stored and secured medications;\r\n Ensures controlled drugs are properly stored, administered and ordered;\r\n Independently manages and provides direct care to patients/individuals;\r\n Participates in individual, group or family therapy;\r\n Participates as a member of an interdisciplinary team in the assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of patient/individual treatment or health care plans;\r\n Manages an assigned caseload of other appropriate clinical activities;�\r\n Provides clinical direction and/or training to staff in individual, group and family service delivery programs;\r\n May participate in home visits and crisis intervention;\r\n May provide in-service training to nursing and paraprofessional staff with regard to signs and symptoms of illness, dysfunction, injury and prevention of same;\r\n May conduct patient/individual- centered conferences with nursing personnel; may consult with and make recommendations to physicians concerning health needs;\r\n May make recommendations on policies or standards;\r\n May prepare reports or correspondence;\r\n May serve as Qualified Intellectual Disability Professional (QIDP);\r\n Performs related duties as required.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

\r\n\r\n Considerable knowledge of\r\n \r\n and ability to independently apply nursing principles, techniques and standards;\r\n specialized individual care applicable to nursing assignment;\r\n medications, their actions, interactions, uses and side effects;\r\n \r\n \r\n Knowledge of\r\n \r\n general and mental health conditions and treatment interventions through utilization of assessment, nursing diagnosis, outcome identification, health planning, implementation and re-evaluation;\r\n adult learning and family systems theory;\r\n and sensitivity to cultural and socio-economic differences;\r\n \r\n \r\n Considerable\r\n \r\n interpersonal skills;\r\n oral and written communication skills;\r\n \r\n \r\n Ability to\r\n \r\n establish and maintain collaborative relationships with other professionals, community resources and providers;\r\n act as a role model to health care staff;\r\n \r\n \r\n Supervisory ability.\r\n\r\n\r\nBEHAVIORAL HEALTH NURSING POSITIONS:\r\n\r\n\r\n Considerable knowledge of behavioral health of individuals;\r\n Skill working with individuals, groups and families;\r\n Ability to provide therapeutic treatment with a variety of individuals.\r\n\r\n\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of experience as a Registered Nurse\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

A Bachelor’s degree in nursing may be substituted for one (1) year of the General Experience.\r\n

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

\r\n\r\n Experience working with individuals with a developmental\r\n and/or intellectual disability, including procedures and terminology relating\r\n to modern methods of care.\r\n Experience in a supervisory capacity of staff across multiple locations,\r\n effectively developing plans to prioritize work and assignments.\r\n Advanced knowledge and demonstrated experience providing care to medically\r\n fragile individuals.\r\n Experience with rehabilitative and interdisciplinary processes.\r\n Experience analyzing and resolving day to day problems of persons with ID/DD.\r\n Experience using Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Teams, Word, and\r\n Excel; as well as familiarity with internal data systems (e-CAMRIS) and use of\r\n integrated HRIS (CoreCT).\r\n Demonstrated organizational and interpersonal skills interacting with, and\r\n communicating information to internal partners, external partners, and the\r\n public, both verbally and written.\r\n Experience utilizing policies and procedures related to payroll, hiring,\r\n purchasing, Client accounting, data collection, and scheduling.\r\n Experience working with teams, clinicians, and case managers.\r\n Experience with and knowledge of processes for identifying State of CT and\r\n federal benefit/entitlement programs.\r\n Experience with and knowledge of ICF policies, procedures, and active\r\n treatment.\r\n \r\n Ability to independently problem solve and resolve complex situations with\r\n individuals and families who need in or out of home supports.\r\n\r\n\r\n

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

\r\n Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a license or temporary permit as a Registered Nurse in Connecticut OR hold a Multistate or Compact Registered Nurse license.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to be fluent in a foreign language or proficient in the use of the American Sign Language in certain designated positions.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.\r\n\r\n

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS
