PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state hospital this class is accountable for rendering bedside care to the physically or chronically ill in cases where the services of a registered or licensed practical nurse are not required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

\r\n Assists doctors and nurses in general care and well being of\r\n patients;\r\n Positions, transfers, moves and lifts patients;\r\n Takes and records temperatures, pulses and respirations;\r\n Observes patients and reports unusual symptoms and/or behavior;\r\n Ensures that restraints are correctly applied;\r\n Tests urine samples for sugar;\r\n Collects specimens;\r\n Keeps beds, bedpans and related equipment clean;\r\n Maintains unit environment for safety of patient;\r\n Transports patients, specimens and other related patient items;\r\n Prepares reports and correspondence including necessary forms\r\n and/or requisitions, dietary orders, death paperwork and assembly of charts;\r\n May\r\n feed, bathe and massage clients as well as respond to their general needs;\r\n May apply or remove braces;\r\n May process billing and/or insurance information;\r\n May act as triage and/or receptionist for incoming patients and\r\n telephone calls;\r\n May schedule patient appointments;\r\n May order supplies;\r\n Performs related duties as required.\r\n\r\n

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

\r\n Considerable interpersonal skills;\r\n Ability to\r\n \r\n work with basic principles of nursing including infection control practices;\r\n deal with physically and chronically ill;\r\n learn safety and fire procedures.\r\n \r\n \r\n\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Certification as a Nurse's Aide.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

One (1) year of experience in patient care in a hospital or nursing home.\r\n\r\nNOTE: The above substitution will not apply to certain positions at UConn Health. Certification as a Nurse’s Aide will be required for those positions.\r\n

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience working in a Skilled Nursing Facility (nursing home)\r\n• Experience providing nursing services to patients with dementia\r\n• Experience working with the veterans population\r\n• Experience working with clients/patients with behavioral health issues or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)\r\n• Experience documenting in an Electronic Health Record (e-MAR)\r\n
