About the Role

The BCT is a statutory not-for-profit body established under Part 10 of the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016. Under the Act, the affairs of the BCT are managed by the Board and led by a Chief Executive Officer and executive leadership team.

The BCT protects and enhances biodiversity on private land, promotes public knowledge and an appreciation of biodiversity, and delivers a Biodiversity Offsets Program. More information is available at: https://www.nsw.gov.au/departments-and-agencies/dcceew/nsw-biodiversity-conservation-trust.

The Board and its sub-committees play a vital role in guiding the BCT’s operations, shaping the strategic direction of the BCT, and ensuring strong performance and governance against the BCT’s purpose under the Act.

The BCT and its Board are subject to the direction of the Minister for the Environment and Board appointments are made by the Minister.

 

Members should be able to demonstrate capabilities to assist the Board in its functions, including: delivering private land conservation programs; seeking strategic biodiversity offset outcomes; supporting and educating participating landholders; overseeing investments to support conservation on private land; embedding Aboriginal cultural values and land management practices; amplifying private land conservation through impactful partnerships, philanthropy and leveraging markets; and setting strategy and managing risk.

Time commitment: Board members are expected to attend at least six board meetings per year, participate on one of the sub-committees of the Board, which typically meet four to six times per year, and attend additional board and committee meetings as required.

  1. increasing public knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the importance of biodiversity by private landholders and other community members
  2. protection and conservation of biodiversity
  3. management of natural resources, including agricultural land
  4. agricultural land production systems
  5. land use planning and operation of local councils
  6. marketing, fundraising, communications and stakeholder engagement
  7. economics and financial management (including investment fund management)
  8. information technology
  9. law, governance and administration
  10. decision-making and leadership.

The NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust (BCT) is part of the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), which works to protect the state’s environment and heritage. It leads the way on climate change, driving the sustainable transition to a net zero economy, powered by affordable, reliable, and clean energy.

The New South Wales Biodiversity Conservation Trust (BCT) is a not-for-profit statutory body, established under Part 10 of the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 and managed by a Board appointed by the Minister for the Environment.

The Trust’s roles are to support and encourage landholders to enter into agreements to conserve and protect biodiversity on private land, guided by the government’s Biodiversity Conservation Investment Strategy; secure biodiversity offsets when developers choose to pay into the Biodiversity Conservation Fund; and other activities that promote greater awareness of, appreciation and understanding of, biodiversity and the importance of conserving it.

We acknowledge the ongoing custodial responsibilities of the Aboriginal peoples of NSW to care for Country and are committed to establishing meaningful partnerships with Aboriginal peoples in the management of the environment.

 

The successful applicant for this role will be required to declare any conflict of interests related to the Biodiversity Offsets Scheme, as defined in the Biodiversity Offsets Scheme Conflict of Interests Protocol. This ensures the department is made aware of potential conflicts of interest so they can be appropriately managed.

Where an applicant has a high-risk “defined interest” in the Biodiversity Offsets Scheme, they may be required to divest this interest before being employed by the department.

The BCT also has restrictions on staff participation in its funded PLC programs. No additional funding, beyond that already agreed to by the BCT, may be sought or approved during time as a BCT employee or for a 12-month period following termination of employment.
