Project Officer Threatened Species

• Ongoing full-time opportunity available  
• Office location – Coffs Harbour preferred; however, NPWS office locations in the North Coast region may be considered by negotiation | Hybrid working supported  
• Salary relative to experience, and ranges from $116Kpa to $129Kpa + employer's contribution to superannuation

The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is seeking a strategic and collaborative Project Officer, Threatened Species to help drive conservation outcomes across NSW.

This is a unique opportunity to work at a state-wide level, helping guide where conservation effort and investment can have the greatest impact for our most vulnerable species.

About the role
In this role, you'll work at the intersection of science, strategy and conservation delivery.

Using spatial, ecological and statistical analysis, you'll work with stakeholders to help identify and prioritise threatened species conservation projects including Assets of Intergenerational Significance (AIS), ensuring resources are focused where they can achieve the best outcomes.

What you'll be doing

• Reviewing and prioritising threatened species conservation programs and sites.
• Analysing spatial and ecological data to inform state-wide conservation decisions.
• Developing practical, science-based recommendations for conservation investment.
• Supporting NPWS branches with threatened species analysis and strategic advice.
• Working closely with operational teams to ensure recommendations are practical, achievable and deliver real conservation outcomes.
• Balancing ecological priorities with stakeholder needs and on-ground realities.

This role needs more than just technical GIS and ecology skills. We're looking for someone who sees the bigger picture, understands stakeholder priorities, and provides practical advice to support threatened species planning and programs across NSW.

About You
You'll bring:

• Strong ecological knowledge and experience in threatened species conservation.
• The ability to analyse large datasets and translate findings into clear, practical recommendations.
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate with diverse teams.
• Sound judgement and an ability to balance ecological priorities with operational realities.
• Experience working across multiple projects and managing competing priorities.

• Experience developing and implementing multi-stakeholder threatened species management projects or programs.
• Demonstrated competency in data analysis and information systems, including GIS, databases and statistical applications.
• Current Australian Class C Driver Licence or equivalent.
• Willingness to obtain 4WD operation certification.
