- Salary relative to experience, and ranges from $128,052 to $142,649 + super
Our Science and Insights team is currently seeking to appoint a Senior Data Scientist to develop and deliver innovative biodiversity data solutions that improve environmental decision-making across NSW.
As a Senior Data Scientist, you'll help shape how biodiversity data is collected, connected and used across NSW. Working with scientists, data specialists and program teams, you'll develop data solutions that improve access to high-quality environmental information and support evidence-based decision making. Your work will contribute to national ecological data standards and help create a more connected biodiversity data ecosystem that supports conservation, research and environmental assessment outcomes.
You are an experienced data professional with strong skills in data engineering, integration and analytics. You enjoy working with complex datasets and using tools such as SQL Server, Power BI, Databricks, Python and R to deliver practical, high-quality solutions. Experience working with environmental, ecological or biodiversity data will help you succeed in the role.
You build strong relationships and communicate technical concepts in a way that is clear and accessible. You enjoy collaborating with a range of stakeholders, solving complex problems and identifying opportunities to improve how data is managed and shared. You are adaptable, outcomes-focused and committed to delivering solutions that create value for customers and support better environmental outcomes.
- Experienced working with Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft PowerBI, GIT, DataBricks, R-Code and Python.
- Understanding of field biological survey methods, data and their application.
- Experience in agile project methodologies, design thinking and/or lean start-up.
Requirements

Senior Data Scientist
The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) works to protect the state’s environment and heritage. It leads the way on climate change, driving the sustainable transition to a net zero economy, powered by affordable, reliable, and clean energy.
DCCEEW conserves and protects the state’s natural environment. It manages the NSW national park estate, including its rich and diverse biodiversity and Aboriginal cultural heritage for future generations.
DCCEEW also ensures sustainable management of water resources across the state, to support the environment, communities and industry.
