Dallas College Wings of Wonder Show Production Internship -
Interns will work alongside Dallas Zoo staff in the Ambassador Animal program to support the production needs of the Wings of Wonder show. Interns will be responsible for most pre-show, during show, and post-show needs that may arise around each daily performance.
Interns might be responsible for a range of production activities including assisting in the development and maintenance of stage properties, creating and executing sound cues, mixing various audio input through a sound board, performing pre and post-show cleaning operations, preparing back stage and onstage set pieces, working with performers to execute scenes and vignettes, assisting in the creation of light and video cues, performing basic cabling, patching and networking protocols, performing onstage, collaborating with the creative team to improve or enhance production values, or engaging with the audience. Interns will not be working directly with animals and will need to abide by rules of working around the live animal actors.
In addition, interns will address show notes as the season progresses, assist in load-in and strike operations, use industry standard construction techniques, work with industry partners, maintain paperwork and support organizational activities.
Interns work 19.5 hours per week for 8-12 weeks. The Zoo does not provide transportation or housing.
All interns are required to complete an educational project, participate in at least one service-learning project, and attend professional development sessions designed specifically for Dallas Zoo interns.
Students will Learn
How to apply and evaluate industry standard knowledge in a non-traditional/amusement performance venue. They will develop the ability to execute cues, engineer audio, create and maintain stage properties, collaborate with a show’s director, performers, and staff. Emphasis will be placed on understanding and adhering to safety standards, including proper use and maintenance of equipment and stage materials. Student interns will also learn how to be a creative contributor in a collaborative setting.
Qualifications
Must have basic working knowledge of production and shop protocols including tool usage, sound console set up, and production organization. Interns will have a history of working in live event production situations. Interns must be able to perform physical challenges involved in the daily duties of the production team including lifting/carrying equipment weighing approximately 50 lbs., sitting, kneeling, stooping, crawling, twisting, reaching above head, pulling, bending, and climbing stairs. Candidate must be able and willing to perform all the above duties outdoors and in all weather conditions.
Internship requirements:
- Must be a current college student or have graduated within the last year
- Available to work 19.5 hours per week for 8-12 consecutive weeks
- Must successfully pass a background check
- Must provide proof of a negative TB test prior to start
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat
- Ability to move throughout Zoo grounds as needed
