Engagement and Belonging Specialist

Help shape an inclusive student experience by advancing engagement, belonging, and success for students across campus.

The Engagement and Belonging Specialist supports multi-ethnic students in cultivating a sense of belonging and providing opportunities for culturally responsive engagement. Responsibilities include individual coaching and consultations with students, conducting direct outreach to historically underrepresented multi-ethnic students, developing and presenting programming focusing on retention, engagement and belonging, collaborating with campus partners to support multi-ethnic students, supervising the work of four undergraduate student engagement assistants, coordinating a student peer mentoring program, and assisting with the organization of meetings with prospective students, family members, and counselors. The person in this position will frequently meet with students and will work collaboratively with a variety of campus partners. The programs and services offered by the Engagement and Belonging Specialist will be informed by data and best practices. This position reports to the Director of Strategic Belonging and Success Initiatives in the Multi-Ethnic Education and Engagement Center (MEC).

1. Master's degree.
2. One year of experience working with U.S. racially/ethnically underrepresented students.
3. One year of experience working with high school or college students in some
combination of teaching, academic coaching, mentoring, or program development.
4. Effective written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
5. Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, as needed.

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

1. Master's degree in student affairs, higher education, counseling or other related
academic field.
2. Three years of experience working with U.S. racially/ethnically underrepresented
students.
3. Three years of experience working with college students in some combination of
academic coaching, mentoring, and/or programming.
4. Demonstrated experience designing and implementing strategies for supporting the
retention and academic success of U.S. racially/ethnically underrepresented college
students.
5. Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with faculty and staff.
6. Demonstrated experience using active learning techniques.
7. Understanding of data management and analysis.
8. One year of experience working with recruitment initiatives geared towards prospective
students and family members.
9. Strong customer service orientation with excellent listening, oral communication skills,
and interpersonal skills.
10. Strong formal public presentation skills.
11. Demonstrated ability to collaborate, work effectively with cross-functional teams, and work
independently.
12. Strong ability to manage multiple, concurrently running projects.
13. Excellent organization and planning skills, including flexibility, a strong attention to detail,
the ability to prioritize, and effective time management skills.
14. Demonstrated ability to solve problem situations effectively.
15. Ability to promote inclusive excellence in the workplace.
16. Experience successfully managing confidential records and knowledge of FERPA.
17. Knowledge of and sensitivity to a Catholic Marianist work environment.
