At Frequency, we partner with clients to plan and deliver major projects that shape our motu. We’re on the look-out for an experienced Project Controls Professional, proficient in planning/scheduling, to join our project controls team (Auckland or Wellington) of 25+ experts. You’ll work alongside experienced practitioners on exciting projects, contribute across different sectors, and grow both your technical depth and consulting capability.

What success looks like:

We met with Blake Mitchell, Head of Project Controls at Frequency, to understand what success looks like to him: “Infrastructure projects are constantly facing change—so in my eyes the ultimate mark of success is a well‑informed client: we raise alarm bells early to signal smoke, before there is fire, and we guide our client with clear and robust information to navigate the challenges. Yes, the schedules need to be structurally sound with clean logic, but more importantly success in this role is about building relationships with the project team to truly understand how the project works and what is really going on. This role will be challenging, but also very rewarding—it offers a great opportunity for the right person with the right attitude to expand professionally through variety and exposure.”

What the projects look like:

You’ll work within the project teams of a variety of NZ’s most exciting major projects—airports, motorways, wind farms, hospitals, water networks, banking, etc. There’s also variety in the type of work—you might be really detailed on one commission, and then working at portfolio level on the next.

What you’ll focus on:

  • Build relationships and integrate into project teams
  • Coordinate across organisations to integrate different sources of information and manage interfaces
  • Communicate in different styles to suit different audiences—from site staff to the Project Director to the executive management team, and everyone in between
  • Build, maintain, and document project schedules—often working with incomplete information—for both early-phase and construction-phase projects
  • Monitor actual progress and track against plan, highlighting risks and issues
  • Produce reporting that visually tells the story, lands with the audience, identifies issues, and recommends mitigation actions
  • Review schedules provided by others—tender schedules, monthly submissions, rebaselines, extension-of-time claims—and provide your expert analysis
  • Undertake Quantitative Schedule Risk Analysis (QSRA)

What sets you up for success:

  • 5+ years’ experience as a planner/scheduler on engineering/construction projects
  • Engineering background preferred
  • Clear communicator who can build relationships with different types of people
  • Proactivity, initiative, and ownership—someone who will chase missing information to deliver results
  • Professional and collaborative—comfortable working independently and within integrated teams
  • Structured, diligent, attentive to detail
  • Essential software skills: strong Primavera P6 capability; intermediate MS Excel (e.g., pivot tables)
  • Helpful software skills: MS Project; advanced MS Excel (e.g., Power Query); Power BI; 4D tools
  • Active interest in your own development, both technical and professional (including growing your network)

How we work:

We’re office‑first because in‑person collaboration strengthens relationships, expedites solutions, and speeds up learning. Flexibility is supported when needed, with hands‑on coaching and exposure across sectors.

We work in a mixed manner between our office and the client/project office to be close to the action.

What you’ll get:

  • Exposure to a variety of the most exciting projects in NZ
  • A sense of belonging in a supportive and highly experienced, like‑minded team that truly understands the value of project controls
  • Five weeks’ annual leave
  • 4.5% employer KiwiSaver contribution
  • Wellbeing benefit
  • Learning and development support including forums, training budgets, and professional memberships
  • Enhanced Parental Leave for primary carers and partners
  • Access to EAP services
