Drop-In Volunteer 

 

Positions Available: 2
Job Type: Volunteer 
Work Schedule: 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. twice per week
Closing Date: June 26, 2026 

 

Friends of Ruby is dedicated to supporting the well-being of 2SLGBTQIA+ youth aged 16-29 through mental health services, social programs, and housing. We operate a Youth Centre, offering barrier-free counselling, hot meals, and community programming, and a Transitional Home, providing emergency and long-term housing with life-skills support.

About the Role 

 

Drop-In Volunteers are essential to the successful functioning of the Youth Centre and play a key role in ensuring youth have reliable access to food, hygiene products, and support. We are seeking volunteers who can commit to a consistent schedule, as regular attendance helps maintain continuity of service and creates a welcoming, dependable environment for youth participants.

 

As a Drop-In Volunteer, you will be responsible for: 

 

Grocery and Hygiene Product Distribution

  • Fulfill grocery orders by assembling and distributing customized bags of groceries and hygiene products for youth participants.
  • Follow organizational systems for grocery and hygiene product distribution, keeping track of completed and outstanding orders.
  • Distribute grocery and hygiene bags to youth accessing the Drop-In.
  • Maintain the organization of the pantry.

 

Communication and Team Collaboration

  • Communicate any irregular requests, concerns, or questions outside of the scope of your role to a Youth Program Worker .
  • Keep Youth Program Workers informed of any noteworthy situations, participant needs, concerns, or incidents that arise in the Drop-In.

 

What You Bring 

 

Qualifications: 

  • Identifies at 2SLGBTQIA+.
  • Able to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Able to lift and pack grocery bags.
  • Commitment to social justice, anti-racism, anti-oppression, Housing First principles, harm reduction, and trauma-informed care.

 

Assets: 

  • Knowledge of and/or experience in the social services, youth services or community support sector.
  • Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) training.
  • De-escalation training

What We Need 

  • Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Check clearance.
  • Ability to commit to a consistent volunteer schedule and communicate in advance regarding any absences or scheduling changes.
